That’s What Travel is Supposed To Do!

Washington DC, when you hear that city name, what comes to mind? For me, I know it has always been a important travel destination steeped in American history. School kids of all ages take field trips there, visitors from other countries mark it as a must see destination when they visit the US. For me though, it never ranked really high on my must see list of places I wanted to visit, and definitely not an itinerary I had considered for an Adventure by Disney vacation.

My wife, Leslie on the other hand had rallied for it on several occasions. Each year when we would plan our family vacations, we’d pull out the Adventures by Disney brochure and dream of exciting and exotic locations around the globe. My daughter Sarah and I would suggest European adventures in Germany or Ireland and talk of the fun we could have in locations like Costa Rica or the Galapagos. Leslie would boldly offer, “well what about our nations capital” and we’d say, well maybe next year, or that’s not as much fun as Costa Rica!

Well, this year for the first time in my life an opportunity to visit DC appeared and I accepted. I was attending a Disney Travel Advisory Council meeting, and the folks from Disney had also set up a mini Adventure by Disney day for us during our time there in order to expose the council members to this incredible vacation experience.

United States Capitol

I arrived early afternoon, and had a few hours to myself before our council dinner that evening. We were staying at the historic Mayflower hotel which is located within a reasonable walk from the National Mall. So I talked to the hotel concierge who gave me some simple directions and a guide map and I was off to discover the city that’s the seat of power of the greatest nation in the world.

Washington Monument

My first stop was the Washington monument. Surrounded by fifty flags, it’s a pretty impressive structure. From there I walked down the mall past Smithsonian buildings and beautiful museums to the Capital building, and that’s where it happened. Yes, that’s where it began to hit me how historical and important this city is. I began to realize that the great men who founded our country and the decisions they made that shaped our lives happened here.

US Grant Memorial

I looked at the statue of Ulysses S. Grant atop his horse and the battlefield depictions on either side of him and thought about all the courageous men and women who have fought for our freedom and this great country.

Lincoln Memorial

From there I walked the other way up the mall past the Washington monument, took some time at the World War II memorial and then on up to the Lincoln memorial. And that’s where it really happened. When I walked up those steps and looked for the first time at Mr Lincoln I was not prepared for how impressive of a scene it was. We’ve all seen pictures of Mr Lincoln looking out across the mall towards the capital, but I had no idea how large it actually was! Seated the statue is nineteen and a half feet tall, and when you stand there it seems gigantic. His hands, his boots, everything about him is just huge and there’s no other way to say it but it’s extremely moving. To think that such a humble man from a simple beginning led this country through the most challenging times in history and did so much to reunite a house once divided. You really have to see this in person to get the full impact of how large and important this memorial really is.

Mt. Vernon

The next day we visited several other monuments and landmarks in the DC area. We also traveled across the Potomac and visited Mt Vernon, the home of George and Martha Washington and their final resting place. We ended our tour back in DC at the Korean War Memorial, an eerie reminder of the impact of war and the fact that Freedom is Never Free

So I can easily say that I went away from this trip with a new perspective on Washington DC as a destination and the way I look at travel. This IS what travel is supposed to do. It should reveal a destinations history and importance, it should make us glad that we ventured there, make us realize there is much to be discovered just outside our front and around the world, and leave us wanting to return to find out more about not only where we are, but who we are.

rickRick is President of Kingdom Magic Vacations, and as you might guess, he loves to travel! His wife Leslie have two great kids, teens actually, and they love to travel together as a family. They love cruising also, and most of all they love Walt Disney World!

You can find Rick at where he loves to share with you the place (Walt Disney World) and the places (anywhere else around the world) that we love to visit. I’ll do that with articles, video and pictures.

Adventures by Disney Launches New ‘Frozen’ Itinerary to Norway

Recently we got a sneak peek at one of the new Adventures by Disney itinerary inspired by the film “Frozen.” Disney Parks Blog has officially announced the “Norway: Fjords, Bergen & Oslo” itinerary – a journey carefully crafted from a partnership between Adventures by Disney and Walt Disney Animation Studios.

Adventures by Disney Launches New ‘Frozen’ Itinerary to Norway

The new itinerary guides families through an eight-day, seven-night epic adventure across the stunning lands of Norway, allowing them to follow the footsteps of the “Frozen” filmmakers by seeing the places, meeting the people and experiencing the beauty that inspired the setting and the look of the film. As with any Adventures by Disney trip, families can expect to partake in authentic activities that only Disney can provide, from discovering the fjord country by safari to learning Norwegian folk dancing.

Adventures by Disney Launches New ‘Frozen’ Itinerary to Norway

Families will bond as they explore the storybook village of Bergen (the real-life inspiration for the kingdom of Arendelle) and also journey through Flåm, Geiranger and Norway’s capital, Oslo. The trip will be full of surprises like rafting down an exhilarating river, hiking across mystical terrains and even rainbow trout fishing.

Two expertly trained Adventure Guides will lead families to make sure that no detail – no matter how small – will be missed. Adventures by Disney allows families to fully immerse themselves in the culture without having to sweat the details of pre-planning anything.

Adventures by Disney Launches New ‘Frozen’ Itinerary to Norway

  • Begin your adventure with a visit to this storybook village which served as the inspiration for the kingdom of Arendelle, home to Anna and her sister Elsa—in Disney’s epic animated-adventure, Frozen.

  • Discover the natural beauty and cultural heritage of this dramatic Scandinavian region as you meet local storytellers, fisherman and farmers along the way.

  • Feel the exhilaration as your family floats along the waters of one of Norway’s breathtaking rivers as it carries you through the gorgeous Norwegian landscapes of natural beauty and wonder.

  • Take part in the rich history of one of the region’s most beloved pastimes—folk dancing—where you’ll feel like a local from Arendelle as you whirl around like Anna in Frozen.

  • Step into the glacial blue waters of Lake Loen for a net fishing experience to catch some of the native trout in this unique activity that will have you feeling like a true local.

  • Get a close-up look at these wooden masterpieces that remain an important part of Norway’s heritage as well as serving as the inspiration for much of the film’s architecture.

VIDEO: An Adventures by Disney Trip to Canada Recap

Well, as they say, all good things must come to an end. Our exciting trip to Canada with Adventures by Disney is over.

It was a spectacular trip, not only because of the destination but also because Adventures by Disney makes everything seamless and fun.

And don’t just take my word for it. We brought back some great video of the trip to share with you.

John Graham, known to Disney Parks Blog fans as your guide to all things Star Wars Weekends, accompanied me to lend his talents for the video portion of this post. Take a look:

If you haven’t tried Adventures by Disney, it’s a great way to travel both domestically and throughout the world, especially with your family. As I said earlier, this was my second Adventures by Disney trip. The first was to Ireland on the Emerald Isle excursion. That was a home run too.

In addition to our super star Adventure Guides – Lisa, Tiffany and Courtney – we had a lot of assistance with the trip including the Canadian Parks Department; employees of the hotels where we stayed – The Emerald Lake Lodge in British Columbia and the Fairmont Springs Hotel in Banff; and the Brewster Travel Company in Canada.

Thanks all. Looking forward to my next destination.

Adventures by Disney: Junior Adventures in the Rockies

I would be remiss if I didn’t talk a little about the Junior Adventurers program – one of the hallmarks of everyAdventures by Disney vacation.

Junior Adventures in the Rockies

Each excursion is specifically designed for families traveling together, with activities for every member of the family. Kids (affectionately known as Junior Adventurers or JAs) have events created specially for them.

For example, on the “Cities of Knights and Lights” trip to England and France, JAs take their own Art Detective tour of The Lovure in Paris while the adults take the official museum tour; and in Cape Town on the “Safari in South Africa” vacation, JAs learn the about the ancient art of falconry at the Eagle Encounter of the Spier Winery while the adults are enjoying an afternoon wine tasting.

Each Adventures by Disney excursion also includes a Junior Adventurer Movie Night, where adults are on their own for dinner, and the Adventure Guides and JAs find their own private space for dinner and a movie. Specifics on what actually happens during Junior Adventurer Movie Night are hard to come by as, technically, no adults are allowed and the JAs are sworn to secrecy.

I did, however, sneak a peek into ours – for research purposes only, of course. On “Roaming the Rockies,” the Junior Adventurers Movie Night ends with a sticky smores session around the campfire.

Adventures by Disney, Roaming the Rockies

You’ll be able to see some of the JAs and their activities in my final post – a wrap-up of our trip including video of all the festivities. The video will feature highlights of the fabulous “Roaming the Rockies” accommodations in Canada (The Emerald Lake Lodge and Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel), our excursions through three of Canada’s most beautiful parks and a report directly from atop a glacier!
