Overwhelmed by Planning a Disney World Vacation?

Today our Travel Planner, Colleen Anastasi shares some reasons why planning a Disneyland Resort vacation can be a lot less overwhelming than a Walt Disney World Vacation might be…

So you are wanting to take your family or friends on a Disney World vacation but even with using the services of a travel planner, you are feeling totally overwhelmed!  Why not try a Disneyland vacation instead!??

Here are just a handful of reasons why Disneyland can be so much more relaxing and doable than the thought of 4 parks covering 47 square miles with more than 25 resort hotels can be.

1.  Location!

Disneyland and Disney’s California Adventure are literally across the esplanade from each other!  You can walk from park to park in just moments.  No bus, boat or monorail required!

2.  Size!

With only 2 parks, both loaded with things to do and see, you will feel totally immersed in the magic, just like you do at Disney World.

3.  It’s the Original!

Disneyland is the park Walt designed.  You can see his touches everywhere – from his apartment over the fire station to the petrified tree he thought would be a good anniversary gift for his wife.

4.  Character Interaction!

You will still see all the characters but it’s different there….more relaxed.  No long massive lines waiting to meet Mickey.  You see him wandering the park – guests say hi or wave…it feels more personal.

5.  MaxPass!

This is Disneyland’s version of fast pass. It is the best!!!  No picking your fast passes 60 days ahead of time….no stressing over what to pick or face the disappointment if your didn’t get it.  With MaxPass ($15 per day), you select your passes once you enter into the park.  Everyone has an even playing field.  You select your fast passes from the app on your phone.  The display will tell you when you can pick your next one.  Set the alarm on your phone so you don’t miss this.  At one point, I had 4 fast passes lined up ready to go.  You can pick fast passes from both parks if you have the park hopper included in your ticket. You also have unlimited Photo Pass pictures!

6.  Weather!

No intense Florida heat or humidity.  Nothing more needs to be said.  If you have done Disney World anytime past June, you know what I am talking about!

7.  Bag Check!

There is ONE security check point.  No need to deal a second time if you park hop.

8.  Price Point!

Typically, a Disneyland stay can be more reasonable than a Disney World stay.  While you have the option to stay on site, there are so many hotels literally right across the street.

9.  Afraid you will miss some of your favorite attractions?  – No worry there!

Disneyland California

Many attractions are available on both coasts – and share the same names.  Others, like Guardians of the Galaxy (Tower of Terror in Hollywood Studios), Goofy’s Sky School (Primeval Whirl in Animal Kingdom) or Radiator Springs (Test Track in Epcot) are extremely similar, just with a different theme.

Mickey’s Soundsational Parade Return

Over at the Disneyland Resort in California we now know that the popular Mickey’s Soundsational Parade is set to return to Disneyland park in January 2019!

Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway

Imagineers have been working hard to create Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. The new ride that will be taking the place of where the Great Movie Ride once was will use breakthrough technology to transform a two-dimensional cartoon into an amazing real-world experience. Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway will be the first-ever ride-through attraction that will be themed to Mickey Mouse! As a big Mickey and Minnie Mouse fan I am so excited Mickey and Minnie will have their very own attraction! The new attraction will feature a brand-new original story and a lovable theme song as it takes guests on a journey inside the wacky and unpredictable world of Disney Channel’s Emmy Award-winning “Mickey Mouse” cartoon shorts.

Eggs-citing Event Returns to Disney Parks

What can you egg-spect? From April 10 – 20, you’ll be able to search for special hidden “eggs” themed to Disney characters at Epcot, Disney California Adventure park and for the first time, Disneyland park!

egg849444-613x459

How it works!

Have fun exploring the parks hunting for ‘eggs’ that portray Disney characters! Record your discoveries by placing the corresponding sticker on the specially themed Egg-stravaganza map to represent that location. Maps and stickers can be purchased for $4.95, plus tax at the following parks and locations:

  • Disney California Adventure park – Elias & Co., Oswald’s, Radiator Springs Curios, Rushin’ River Outfitters, Studio Store and Treasures in Paradise.
  • Disneyland park – Disney Showcase, Fairy Tale Treasures, Gag Factory, Pieces of Eight and Pooh Corner
  • Epcot – Heritage Manor (American Adventure Pavilion), Disney Traders, International Gateway, Pin Central and Port of Entry

There are a dozen reasons for you to love the event this year! I know what new characters have been added, but it’s up to you to find them.

epcot-egg-hunt

Don’t crack under the pressure! Whether you choose to hunt for eggs or not, return your map to a redemption location: Elias & Co. at Disney California Adventure park; Disney Showcase in Disneyland park or Disney Traders in Epcot and participate in an ‘egg-scramble’ to pick up your surprise.

What is the surprise, eggs-actly? Let’s just say it bears a striking resemblance to what you are already searching for!

Purchase as many maps as you’d like—while supplies last—and play again and again! No discounts apply. You should also know that separate admission is required to enter Disney Theme Parks and the experience is subject to restrictions and change without notice.

Traveling With Kids to the Disneyland Resort

Your kids are only young for a few years and there is no better place to spend time as a family than at the original magical kingdom, Disneyland!

Disneyland Park

Here are some of the magical travel tips that can help you plan your next visit. It’s easy for the whole family to get involved thanks a free iPhone and iPad app that lets you explore exciting things to see and do at the resort.

Another great tool is m.disneyland.com — you can access it through your mobile device and bring it with you to the theme parks! It has attraction locations, park hours, show times and lots of helpful information.

Disneyland Resort has really grown in the past few years.  Now there are even more unforgettable adventures and timeless favorites to enjoy from day to night.

Mater's Junkyard Jamboree

For kids five to thirteen, there is Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree in Disney California Adventure Park. You’ll want to arrive early for this popular attraction in Cars Land.   There’s also Fantasy Faire, an enchanting storybook world in the Disneyland Park where little ones can meet Disney princesses. And, of course, there’s the classic must-do attraction Matterhorn Bobsleds.

After dark, the entire family can enjoy two nighttime spectaculars — Fantasmic! in Disneyland Park and World of Color in Disney California Adventure Park. World of Color is one of the experiences where you can use Disney FASTPASS Service on select attractions — it’s included with valid theme park admission and allows you to enjoy Disneyland Resort while your place in line is saved.

World of Color

Another great service is Disney’s PhotoPass Service — imagine getting everyone into the photo at the same time!

It’s comforting to know that Disneland also has First Aid facilities in easy-to-find locations at both theme parks. And there’s also a place to retrieve Lost and Found items just outside the main entrance to Disneyland Park.

We hope your next visit is as memorable and remember, your kids are only young once so make the most of your time together at the Disneyland Resort.

Special New Year’s Eve Celebrations at Disneyland Resort

From a New Year’s Cupcake at Jolly Holiday Bakery in Disneyland park to the Napa Rose New Year’s Eve Bash, the Disneyland Resort will ring in 2014 with something fun for everyone.

New Year's Eve at Disneyland Resort

Let’s start with the Napa Rose celebration. Actually, there are two: an early seating from 5:30 – 7 p.m. with a four-course dinner (think grilled hand-harvested sea scallops and 28-day-aged prime New York beef … Chef Andrew Sutton’s fabulous Wine Country Feast of seasonal classics) and festive decorations. Cost is $125 plus tax and gratuity. The perfect way to start the party early when you have plans later in the evening.

The late seating commences with bubbly at 8:15 p.m. and a dinner dance party with live music – they’re adding a dance floor in the lounge area with hundreds of silver, gold, red and black balloons to create a magical party. Plus hats and party favors, of course.

Napa Rose Restaurant Disneyland resort

Start with honeyed profiteroles with goat cheese and cranberry jam, followed by imported Osetra caviar parfait layered with Skuna Bay salmon tartare, cucumber pearls and crème fraîche. You’ll move on to three more courses before a 30-minute “intermission” for dancing, followed by two more courses (including dessert). It’s all perfectly timed to take you to midnight. Dancing goes ‘til 1 a.m.

The five-course tasting menu is $220 plus tax and gratuity (no children’s pricing), plus $65 for a flight of world-class wines for pairing. Chef Sutton also has a delicious vegetarian menu.

For reservations, call Kingdom Magic at 866-972-6244 or speak to your travel planner. Valet is complimentary.

Flos V-8 Cafe at Disney's California Adventure

Other celebrations, special tastes for New Year’s Eve:

    • Look for menu specials in Disneyland park at Carnation Café on Main Street U.S.A. (surf and turf with shrimp and sirloin steak); at French Market (roasted pork chop with Calvados applesauce, braised greens and sweet potato soufflé); at Blue Bayou (a seafood pot pie); and Cafe Orleans (flat iron steak with bone marrow demi-glace, garlic mashed potatoes and acorn squash).
    • Flo’s V8 Café at Disney California Adventure park will offer meat loaf with Coca-Cola barbecue sauce and two sides.
    • Steakhouse 55 at the Disneyland Hotel has a prixe fixe, three-course menu for $65 that includes spinach salad with warm bacon vinaigrette, filet and lobster and chocolate paté.
    • Storyteller’s Café at Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa has a prixe fixe two-course dinner with with porcini-rubbed rib-eye with scampi-style prawns, mashed potatoes and Cabernet demi-glace, and a duo of dark chocolate and Bailey’s crème brûlée with espresso cookies for $29.99.
  • And who can resist a New Year’s Eve cupcake? Especially the New Year’s Cupcake with dark chocolate cake, Nutella filling, Belgian white chocolate frosting with black and silver decorations, silver disco dust, a chocolate Mickey, chocolate truffle and bow tie? That’s a party on a plate! Look for it at Jolly Holiday Bakery, Fidler, Fifer & Practical Cafe and Pacific Wharf Café at Disney California Adventure park, and White Water Snacks at Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa.

Happy 2014!

‘World of Color – Winter Dreams’ Brings Pixar’s ‘Toy Story Nutcracker’ to Disney California Adventure Park

To put together a show like “World of Color – Winter Dreams,” it takes an army, or in our case “Green Army Men”! For this new, full-length original show we have enlisted the help of  PIXAR Animation Studios. Imagineers went to them with a wild idea: what if “Toy Story” characters decided to perform Tchaikovsky’s “The Nutcracker”?

‘World of Color – Winter Dreams’ Brings Pixar's 'Toy Story Nutcracker' to Disney California Adventure Park

In the original ballet, Clara’s Christmas tree grows and the audience shrinks to this size of a toy beneath the tree. This became the inspiration. The “World of Color” technology was perfect for this effect, because the animators can make the tree grow in front of guests eyes.

Then, below the tree is where the magic really happens. Beneath the tree quests will find Woody, the show’s director. Over the summer he has put together the toys’ version of the ballet. Of course, they have their own special spin on it. Each musical piece animators used – Miniature Overture, Trepak (Russian Dance), Tea (Chinese Dance) and Waltz of the Flowers – took on a life of its own. Pixar gave them all special arrangements to match the characters; for instance, the Trepak dance became western to fit Woody and Jessie’s duet.

Another great example of putting a new spin on the classic is Tea (Chinese Dance). Pixar animators took inspiration from Walt Disney’s “Fantasia” and the Mushroom scene. They replaced the Mushrooms with Little Green Men and the baby Mushroom with Rex in a tutu. The result is pure magic!

It’s wonderful when Disney Imagineers can synergize and partner with great artists like PIXAR and let everyone’s creative energy flow together into the idea. It grows and grows like Clara’s Christmas tree, becoming an exciting new work of art with each pass. And in the end, Disney audiences get to see the magic that great partnerships can make.

At Walt Disney World Resort, the July Fourth fireworks spectacular will rocket into the air above Cinderella Castle every night with “Disney’s Celebrate America! A Fourth of July Concert in the Sky.” The dazzling display at Magic Kingdom Park will be orchestrated to an upbeat musical tribute to America as patriotic lighting covers the Castle.

The Walt Disney World Resort fireworks spectacular takes place at 9 p.m. on July 3 and 4, and 10 p.m. on July 1, 2, 5, 6 and 7.

Walt Disney World Resort guests will also be treated to a fun-filled spectacle as Goofy, Donald and Pluto, dressed as a colonial fife and drum corps, join a spirited procession down Main Street, U.S.A, prior to the daily Celebrate a Dream Come True parade at Magic Kingdom Park. The pre-parade features the Main Street Philharmonic, Citizens of Main Street and Walt Disney’s historic horse-drawn calliope.

Across the Resort, you will also find treats inspired by our traditional American celebration. You’ll be able to try the Red, White and Blue Strawberry Shortcake at Storybook Treats in Magic Kingdom Park and the Fourth of July Cupcake with apple pie filling, caramel buttercream and apple crisp topping at Disney’s Hollywood StudiosDisney’s Animal Kingdom, or Downtown Disney. At Epcot, you can taste the Skillet-Baked Peach Cobbler with Vanilla Whipped Cream or the Red, White and Blue “Baked Alaska” Mousse.

At the Disneyland Resort, we’re saluting our nation’s birth in a big way with “Disney’s Celebrate America! A Fourth of July Concert in the Sky.”
