Get The Inside Scoop on The Seven Dwarfs Mine Train at the Magic Kingdom

Disney Parks shared a photo that was snapped by Walt Disney Imagineering inside the Mine Scene at the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train attraction in New Fantasyland at the Magic Kingdom. In this scene, the Dwarfs are hard at work in the mine and this chalkboard is how they keep track of the treasures they find.

When you ride through the attraction, you’ll see that jewels appear in four different sizes and in six different colors: red, green, amber, purple, blue and clear.

Walt Disney Imagineering also released a video of Seven Dwarfs Mine Train and we wanted to be sure you didn’t miss it.

In the video, compare onboard footage of the attraction side-by-side with an original CGI onboard that was created early on in the attraction’s development.

The incredible, new daytime spectacular, “Disney Festival of Fantasy Parade,” will make its grand debut at Magic Kingdom Park on Sunday, March 9.

All the enormous, colorful floats have been constructed. Costumes have been designed and created. The original musical score has been recorded, and now the Cast of the “Disney Festival of Fantasy Parade” is busy rehearsing for the premiere performance!

Before rehearsals could begin, Show Director Randy Wojcik and Choreographer Stephen Di Schiavi held a choreography workshop to further develop their initial ideas about staging and movement. They recently gave us a peek into that workshop, for a taste of what we can expect to see when the performers bring the stories of “Disney Festival of Fantasy Parade” to life on the parade route.

So who else is ready to join the celebration, once the “Disney Festival of Fantasy Parade” debuts March 9?

New Enhancements Coming To The Magic Kingdom

Walt Disney World has just begun a project that will make the Magic Kingdom even better. All of these changes take place in the Central Plaza area between the end of Main Street and Cinderella Castle.

They’re adding several new elements to the area, including sculpted gardens, additional pathways, expanded restaurant seating and even a special viewing area for fireworks and other performances.

Look closely at our fly-through video and you’ll notice that the enhancements will include new trees and more landscaping in the Central Plaza area. The sculpted gardens planned for the location are inspired by the lush grounds seen around European castles and chateaus.

Also, seating outside of Casey’s Corner and The Plaza restaurant will nearly double in size.

From Disney California Adventure to New Fantasyland, Disney Parks has had a long-standing track record of being able to make enhancements while maintaining the magic of the Disney experience for park guests!

This multi-phase enhancement project has already begun and it’ll be completed in 2015.

A Sneak Peek at Disney Festival of Fantasy Parade Costumes

This March, Walt Disney World Resort guests will feast their eyes on some of the most extravagant and elaborate costume designs in Disney Parks history when the cast of Disney Festival of Fantasy Parade dance through the streets of Magic Kingdom.

0210ZW_0911DR-640x426

A new daytime parade, Disney Festival of Fantasy Parade is a celebration of New Fantasyland at Magic Kingdom. The parade will bring beloved characters found in this enchanting land to Main Street, U.S.A. with innovative parade floats; a new soundtrack featuring classic favorites from Disney films and an original theme song; and an impressive array of stunning costumes.

0210ZW_0206DR1-640x426

From first sketch to final stitch, the production process took almost a year to complete. The creations transpired in 10 different costume houses across eight cities and two countries, with the Creative Costuming facilities in both Florida and California among the mix.

0118ZW_0690TA-640x426

Costume designer Mirena Rada is no stranger to Disney Parks, as her body of work includes design projects for Disneyland Resort, Tokyo Disney Resort and Hong Kong Disneyland Resort. But when she was brought on to create costumes for Disney Festival of Fantasy Parade, Rada reached a new milestone – designing for a Walt Disney World Resort theme park.

0210ZW_0720DR-640x426

“This was a personal first and it turned out to be a very different experience from other projects,” said Rada. “Everything here at Magic Kingdom is done on a considerably bigger scale and the resources are aplenty. I took every opportunity to avail myself of these specialties.”

0118ZW_0643TA-640x575

From the Swing Thugs aboard the “Tangled” unit’s massive longship to the troupe of Scottish dancers announcing Merida’s arrival in the “Brave” unit, Rada carefully planned and executed the detail of each piece. Visual cues such as color and texture choices were taken from each float and incorporated in the costume designs. Additionally, she closely studied the style guide of each film for whimsical details and fabric patterns to capture the essence of each story.

Putting a modern spin on classic elements is a theme that resonates throughout Rada’s designs. From the swan neck collar and iridescent feathers on the Princess Garden unit’s Swan Court ball gowns to the sculpted conch shell headpiece and shimmering pastel dress that comprise “The Little Mermaid” unit’s Seashell Girl, the old and new are blended seamlessly – a trend that is ever present in today’s fashion world.

0118ZW_0671TAa-632x800

The production process mirrors current fashion trends, utilizing new technology to design and print custom fabrics in house. Rada partnered with Walt Disney World Resort costumers to select fabrics that would withstand the central Florida climate while also accommodating the needs of each performer.

After gathering the materials, she and a Creative Costuming graphic artist worked together to create almost 40 custom fabric prints. This includes the spandex swirls on the Finale unit’s bright and beautiful Bubble Girl, expansive fins of “The Little Mermaid” unit’s regal Lion Fish and furry plaids and tweed stripes worn by the “Newsies inspired” Lost Boys of the “Peter Pan” unit.

0210ZW_0625MS-640x425

An innovative 3D printing technology brought to life even Rada’s most intricate concepts, with the hauntingly elegant beaks of the Ravens in the “Sleeping Beauty” unit being a prime example. Using a 3D origami program, a paper beak was created and placed on a performer’s head to obtain the initial scale and shape. A digital sculptor then worked on the filigree beak design, which was printed, fitted and refined to produce the final shape. Each piece was base coated, bronzed, lacquered and gilded with fiery Swarovski stones to complete the finished look.

0118ZW_0627TA-640x516

In the true spirit of fashion, each look was not considered complete until complemented by the perfect hair, makeup and accessories. The Finale unit’s Cha Cha Girl is the queen of head-to-toe ensemble with her big top inspired fit and flare dress, bolero jacket embellished with sequins, star spangled tights and hair reminiscent of pulled taffy exuding the essence of Storybook Circus in New Fantasyland. However, simple touches that might elude guests, such as the elegant gold tones incorporated into eyelashes on the female Swan Court members, and in the custom socks worn by the Lost Boys were not overlooked – a testament to Disney’s attention to detail.

0210ZW_0006DR1-640x426

When the Disney Festival of Fantasy Parade `steps off this spring, Rada will see her creations truly come to life. This perfect collaboration between artists, craftsmen and engineers is what she calls “a designer’s dream.”

Pirates of the Caribbean Marks 40 Years at Magic Kingdom Park

Pirates of the Caribbean, a guest-favorite attraction at the Walt Disney World Resort, will marked its 40th anniversary at the Magic Kingdom Park on Sunday, December 15.

Pirates of the Caribbean

The first Pirates of the Caribbean, which transports guests back to a Caribbean filled with pirate treasure, blasting cannons, sword fights and songs, opened at Disneyland park in 1967. The attraction debuted at Magic Kingdom Park in 1973, serving as one of the park’s first major additions after its 1971 opening.

Over the years, only a few changes have been made to the attraction here at Walt Disney World Resort, notably the addition of Captain Jack Sparrow and Captain Barbossa from the “Pirates of the Caribbean” film franchise in 2006. Villains Davy Jones and Black Beard were also added later on in the form of ghostly apparitions.

In honor of the attraction’s anniversary, check out the video clip below, in which Walt himself shares his excitement on plans for Pirates of the Caribbean.

According to Disney Parks Blog, Pirates of the Caribbean was one of the last attractions Walt Disney personally oversaw the creation of back in the 1960s. During planning, Walt constructed a team Walt Disney Imagineers that included (now Disney Legends) Claude Coats, Blaine Gibson, X. Atencio and Marc Davis.

‘Tis the Season for Gingerbread All Across Walt Disney World Resort

Each year, the elaborate gingerbread creations get bigger and better at Walt Disney World theme parks and resorts. From a 3-foot-tall replica of Philadelphia’s Independence Hall in Liberty Tree Tavern in the Magic Kingdom Park to the life-sized gingerbread house at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa, it takes a multitude of dedicated pastry chefs to build each design.

'Tis the Season for Gingerbread All Across Walt Disney World Resort

Check out the video that showcases this year’s new creation at Disney’s BoardWalk, a sweet replica of a Jersey Shore Boardwalk concession stand. By the numbers, it’s 674 gingerbread shingles, 420 marshmallows for marquee lights and 90 pounds of saltwater taffy for the wreaths.

The handiwork starts with a concept and scale drawing, then it takes some serious teamwork to construct the gingerbread designs on stage in front of guests.

'Tis the Season for Gingerbread All Across Walt Disney World Resort

Most of the displays have delicious sweets for sale, and activities like gingerbread decorating. Here’s where you’ll find other fab holiday treats through January 2, 2014:

    • A 17-foot gingerbread holiday tree in the Grand Canyon Concourse of Disney’s Contemporary Resort, made with 136 pounds of honey, 211 pounds of flour, 101 eggs and 151 pounds of chocolate!
    • A life-size, spinning carousel in the lobby of Disney’s Beach Club Resort has ponies made of chocolate fondant and hand-painted chocolate Disney characters – made with 50 pounds of dark chocolate, 100 pounds of confectioners’ sugar and 10 quarts of simple syrup. The lobby at Disney’s Yacht Club Resort features a holiday village with a miniature train surrounded with a sugar rock mountains.
    • At Epcot, the promenade at The American Adventure is home to Mrs. Claus’ Bake Shop with freshly baked gingerbread, sugar and chocolate cookies, peppermint bark, hot cocoa and ciders.
    • Also at Epcot, The Land Pavilion showcases gingerbread creations representing icons from Disney parks and resorts around the world.
