What Does 2 Days Before a Race Feel Like?

What Does 2 Days Before a Race Feel Like?

Here we are…just 2 days until the running of the Wine & Dine Half Marathon at Disney World.  The course will take us 13.1 miles through 3 parks and then to an after party in Epcot until 4am to celebrate our accomplishment!  But what does 2 days before the race feel like to a runner?  If you’re me…it’s nerves, nerves, nerves.  Before any race I find myself double and triple checking my gear that I’m packing to be sure that I have it all…this happens whether or not we’re traveling for a race or just driving to one from our home.  I’m always afraid I’m going to forget something vital.  I mean, there’s the one race outfit, the back-up weather outfit, the fuel belt, the Vibrams, the Injinji socks, the Body Glide, the compression socks, the headband and ponytails, the Ipod, the sport watch….AHHHHH…will the list never end?!

Then there is the charging of equipment…the watch, the Ipod etc.  I still haven’t finished creating my playlist for the run on Saturday…sigh…add that to the To Do List yet.  I like to make sure that I have a playlist for the different race lengths…this way as I put it together I know when I’m nearing the end of the playlist…I know where my “push” is going to be.  And sleeping…you expect me to sleep well?!  Forget it…the night before the race I usually don’t sleep that well….the nerves get the better of me, I may sleep on and off, but it’s not restful.  So right now I guess you could say that I feel my body “humming”, humming with the anticipation of the race, waiting to see what the weather will be like, waiting to see how I feel after the start.

I feel bad for my husband because as the race draws even closer and we head to the pre-race gathering it doesn’t take a lot to get me moody….he likes to pace around and stretch forever…it makes me batty.  I’m just not wired like that.  He likes to keep drinking fluids…I’ve cut myself off because I don’t want that feeling of running and needing a restroom.  My goal?  Finish the race without using a Port a Potty!  I just want the race to start…I don’t love the long wait times…I want to get going and get in my rhythm.

What Does 2 Days Before a Race Feel Like?

Some people will say that if I’ve trained enough I shouldn’t be nervous.  I do train and I try to follow the Galloway training program as closely as I can, but life gets in the way, let’s be honest.  Some weekends you don’t get those long runs in like you wanted to.  And really, can you ever train enough?  So yes, I’m left wondering if missing a long run here or there is going to hurt me.  I’m also feeling the pressure, purely from myself, to run a personal best.  The last 2 races that I’ve run have been personal bests for me…so how can I, as an athlete, not want to do better than my time last year in this race?  It’s not enough for me to finish…I want to improve from year to year…I want to get faster and stronger, I’m putting in the time and I’m pushing myself…so I expect “me” to show “me” some results.

So that’s what 2 days before a race feels like if you’re me!  What does your 2 days before feel like?

‘Sole’ Mates Renew Vows at Walt Disney World Marathon

There’s nothing I love more than a vow renewal – it’s a romantic reaffirmation of love after years of history together that often becomes a family affair. It’s the ultimate celebration to remind you that your better half has been alongside you through both thick and thin.

Nearly 10 years ago today, Wendie and Sean Cheyney said “I do” in the middle of the Walt Disney World Marathon at mile 10.5 – right in front of Cinderella Castle. And today, I’m delighted to share that they’re doing it all over again.

College Football Season Kicks Off with the MEAC/SWAC Challenge at Walt Disney World Resort

Are you ready for some football?

Are you ready for some football? College football fans united at Walt Disney World Resort this past weekend to celebrate the start of the season and partake in a special Fan Day for the 8th Annual MEAC/SWAC Challenge presented by Disney.

MEAC/SWAC Challenge

Disney is a proud sponsor of the MEAC/SWAC Challenge. While football is at the center of the event, the MEAC/SWAC Challenge is more than just a game – it’s a celebration that underscores the importance of diversity and higher education. Events range from a career panel for high school students to a Legends Reception honoring accomplished alums from Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

Gearing up for Game Day, fans of the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats (MEAC) and Alabama State Hornets (SWAC) let their competitive spirit fly, all in good fun.

Bethune-Cookman head football coach Brian Jenkins kicked off the festivities at the first-ever MEAC/SWAC Challenge Pep Rally at Downtown Disney, which included appearances from star football players from both schools.

Gearing up for Game Day

Over at Epcot, hundreds of feet kept moving to the beat as the Wildcats and Hornets took the park by storm with a parade of marching bands, drill teams and cheerleaders.

Fast forward to Sunday at the Florida Citrus Bowl… Central Florida’s own Bethune-Cookman Wildcats scored a 38-28 victory over the Alabama State Hornets. With the win, Bethune-Cookman became the first team to ever win back-to-back MEAC/SWAC Challenge games.

SPRING TRAINING BEGINS AT DISNEY WORLD FOR ATLANTA BRAVESGOTTA BE, CENTERFIELD: A groundskeeper cuts a silhouette of Mickey Mouse’s head into the outfield of Champion Stadium at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. on Feb. 24, 2011, in preparation for the 2011 Major League Baseball Spring Training schedule. The stadium is the Spring Training home to the Atlanta Braves. The Braves will play their first 2011 Spring Training game Feb. 27, 2011 against the New York Mets. ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex is a 220-acre, multi-sport facility at Walt Disney World Resort.

The Atlanta Braves began their first week of full-squad workouts Saturday at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Disney, marking the start of a new era for the Braves who added first-year manager Fredi Gonzalez and all-star second baseman Dan Uggla this season.

The Braves, who are in their 14th spring training season at Champion Stadium at Disney, are under new management for the first time since 1990 after long-time manager Bobby Cox retired last season. But some regular faces remain, including last year’s rookie sensation Jason Heyward and 18-year veteran Chipper Jones.

The Braves are holding full-squad workouts each day leading up to the opening of Grapefruit League play this weekend. The Braves’ first home game at Disney is Sunday against the Mets at 1:05 p.m. at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.
