Dad’s Turn! Restaurants and Shops Celebrate Father’s Day with Bargains, Gifts and Special Menu Items at Downtown Disney District

Dad’s Turn! Restaurants and Shops Celebrate Father’s Day with Bargains, Gifts and Special Menu Items at Downtown Disney District

Whether Dad is into jazz, customized toy race cars, haute (hat) couture or just good grub, he and the rest of the family will find something make Father’s Day extra special this weekend in the Downtown Disney District at the Disneyland Resort.

Does Dad look good in a fedora? More of an Indiana Jones kind of guy? He can get 20 percent off his pick Friday through Saturday, June 16-18, at Chapel Hats.

Is it a good weekend for auto racing? It’s always a good weekend for auto racing! Take Dad to RideMakerz in Downtown Disney District on Saturday or Sunday, build your ride, and Dad can build a second ride for free!

Dad’s Turn! Restaurants and Shops Celebrate Father’s Day with Bargains, Gifts and Special Menu Items at Downtown Disney District

If Dad grooves to New Orleans Jazz, look into the regular Sunday Brunch Fest, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Ralph Brennan’s Jazz Kitchen. Brunch features New Orleans-inspired cuisine, of course, plus live entertainment from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and Louisiana-brewed Abita beer on tap.

June 16 to 18, Tortilla Jo’s is celebrating Dad with all his favorite flavors in El Papi’s Fajitas – grilled steak and chicken, Mexican shrimp and chorizo, Michoacan-style carnitas, grilled nopales, roasted cebollitas and bell peppers, queso ranchero and house-made molcajete salsa.

Uva Bar celebrates throughout the month with a special Father’s Day sandwich: the Big Daddy Burger with their signature beef blend, applewood bacon, fried egg, avocado, white cheddar, tomato, lettuce, secret sauce and brioche bun. Dad may want to pair it with a Sierra Nevada Tropical Torpedo, combining hops with essence of mango, papaya and passion fruit.

At the ESPN Zone on Sunday, there will be two Father’s Day specials created especially for the day: a Korean-style burger made with grass-fed beef, sambal aioli, pulled pork BBQ sauce, kimchi and tempura-fried avocados or, for the bigger appetite, the Father’s Day Grill Out: smoked brisket, smoked pork ribs, grilled beer-braised bratwurst sausage and street-style corn. Cocktail service will be available throughout the day in the ESPN Zone’s Patio lounge, with seating on a first come, first served basis.

Naples Ristorante e Pizzeria offers The Godfather Pizza on Saturday and Sunday: pepperoni, Italian sausage, meatball, green peppers, mushrooms, red onion, mozzarella and tomato sauce.

When dinnertime comes around, Catal tempts Dad with a three-course prime rib dinner, Sunday only.

If he is in more of a snacking mood, you could take him to Wetzel’s Pretzels Saturday or Sunday, where buying a pretzel and a drink will get him a free pretzel dog. Or, if he has more of a sweet tooth, get him a DAD Box at Sprinkles, available Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The DAD box is loaded with his favorite treats, including Red Velvet, Salty Caramel, Black & White and Vanilla Milk Chocolate.

Lots to do, and lots to eat at Downtown Disney District this Father’s Day weekend, but I’m sure Dad has the energy for it. After all, energy is a big part of what fatherhood is about.

Celebrate Halloween and Oktoberfest This Month in the Downtown Disney District at the Disneyland Resort

October is all about seasonal celebrations in the restaurants, shops and entertainment venues of the Downtown Disney District at the Disneyland Resort. Whether your taste runs to harvest, Halloween or “hoisting” a beverage for the occasion, the Downtown Disney District offers something for every age and every member of the family.

Pumpkin is one of the predominant tastes of the season, and there is plenty to taste at locations throughout the Downtown Disney District: a pumpkin churro from the California Churro cart, a pumpkin macaroon from Kayla’s Cakes, Pumpkin Spice Latte at Starbucks and a pumpkin smoothie made with almond milk, pumpkin, bananas and a hint of cinnamon and nutmeg at Jamba Juice.

Halloween celebrants can enjoy an evening of “Scary-Oke,” including costume and karaoke contests, at Crossroads at House of Blues on Saturday, Oct. 31. LittleMissMatched is offering a Buy 3 Get One Free deal on limited-edition Halloween-themed socks.

And if, inspired by Haunted Mansion Holiday, you’d like to construct your own haunted gingerbread house, Ralph Brennan’s Jazz Kitchen will offer a Haunted Gingerbread House Building Workshop from noon to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 24. A Gingerbread Kit and two seats at the work table are available for $48; additional seats would be $12 apiece.

Meanwhile, October brings with it the opportunity to show your Bavarian side with the celebration of Oktoberfest. Uva Bar is currently offering an Oktoberfest-inspired menu through October 31. Crossroads at House of Blues will have a special Oktoberfest Celebration this Saturday, Oct. 10, featuring specialty menu items, a stein-hoisting competition and a pretzel eating contest. Meanwhile, a special Oktoberfest menu at House of Blues features grilled bratwurst, schnitzel, apple strudel and giant Bavarian pretzels.

It’s a full month of October events at the Downtown Disney District. Choose your celebration!

Cool Ear Hat Ornament Collection Expands as Summer Heats Up at Disney Parks

Ear Hat Ornament Collection

Last summer, I was reflecting on winter temperatures when I shared a look at Mouseketeer ear hat-inspired ornaments. As summer has recently descended on the Sunshine State, I’m again thinking about cooler temperatures with a first look at new ear hat ornaments. Aaron Babcock, Product Developer for seasonal merchandise, told me that last year’s ornaments were so popular that they expanded the collection.

“We were thrilled with the response from our guests about the porcelain ear hats,” said Aaron. “This year, we have significantly expanded the assortment to include hats inspired by villains, princesses, classic characters and even Pixar characters. We’ve also added a tremendous amount of detail to each new ornament.”

There are approximately 40 new ear hat ornaments. The majority of the hats were designed by Disney Design Group artist Costa Alavezos and professional intern Derrick Lirette. Artist Cody Reynolds contributed the princess ear hat designs. I spoke with Costa about the details found on the ornaments.

“This year, we made the ornaments out of resin,” explained Costa. “This material allowed us to capture lots of details. By using resin, we could add glitter, decals and other embellishments that can’t be added to porcelain. I was delightfully surprised to see the final hats as each hat has such personality.”

The hats will be introduced to Disney Parks in the coming weeks. They will also be found via the online Disney Parks Store. The best places to find them at Disney Parks are Disney’s Days of Christmas and World of Disney at Downtown Disney Marketplace in Florida, World of Disney in the Downtown Disney District in California. They will also be found in the Emporium location found on Main Street, U.S.A. in Magic Kingdom Park, and the China Closet location in Disneyland park.

Each hat is limited edition

One detail I love is how the artists used the front and back of each hat (best seen with the Chip and Dale or WALL-E and Eve hats). I also thought the Princess Aurora design was clever (pink dress on one side and blue dress on the other). Rapunzel’s extra long hair was a nice touch.

Each hat is limited edition with the exception of the princess collection. Aaron said to watch for additional holiday and fashion-inspired hats coming in the next few months.
