9 Dishes You Don’t Want to Miss at the 2017 Epcot International Food & Wine Festival at Walt Disney World Resort

We’re counting down the days to Aug. 31 and the opening of the Epcot International Food & Wine Festival. And with 75 days this year, there’s plenty of time to sip and taste your way through the 35 Marketplaces circling World Showcase Lagoon and stretching into Future World.

Still, the sheer amount of food and drink can be overwhelming, so we’ll give you a head start by sharing our favorites from the multiple chef tastings of new dishes and from working on the new cookbook for this year’s festival.

In no special order, here are nine new tastes that we recommend not missing at this year’s festival:

1. Crispy Chicken with Griddled Cornbread and Red-Eye Gravy at the Farm Fresh Marketplace is the trifecta of Southern cooking.
2. Sounds kooky, but the Teriyaki-glazed SPAM® Hash with Potatoes, Peppers, Onions and Spicy Mayonnaise is a winner in the Hawai’i Marketplace.
3. The Bougatsa at the Greece Marketplace is ethereal: warm phyllo strudel with sweet vanilla custard, lemon honey syrup and cinnamon. East dessert first!
4. The Madras Red Curry with Roasted Cauliflower, Baby Carrots, Chickpeas, and Basmati Rice in the India Marketplace is vegetarian, gluten friendly and delicious.
5. Spain Marketplace gives us the perfect carry-around nibble: Charcuterie in a Cone with a selection of imported Spanish meats, cheeses and olives with an herb vinaigrette.

6. Spain gave us another new favorite, the Sweet Olive Oil Cake with Powdered Sugar and Lemon Curd. Sublime.
7. If you love the Cheddar Cheese soup at Le Cellier, the Warm Irish Cheddar Cheese and Stout Dip with Irish Brown Bread at the Ireland Marketplace will make you happy. Nicely pairs with the new Guinness Blonde American Lager.
8. We’re fans of the Cauliflower Risotto with Pulled Chicken, Artichokes, Spinach, Parmesan Cheese and Aged Balsamic at the new Almond Orchard Hosted by Blue Diamond Almond Breeze. (They’re also pouring Dom Pérignon and Vueve Cliquot at this Marketplace.)

9. Scallop fans will love the Seared Scallops with Roasted Corn and Butterbean Succotash and Chili-chipotle Butter Sauce at the new Coastal Eats Marketplace. They’re pairing the dish with a nice pinot gris from Oregon.

The Epcot International Food & Wine Festival dates are Aug. 31- Nov. 13. The Party for the Senses grand tasting events, signature dinners and other special wine and culinary programs require reservations and separate event admission.

One of the “must-dos” at Epcot is Mission: SPACE.

 

So, now there’s even MORE to love.

Starting Aug. 13, Disney will relaunch the attraction with a brand new experience and an enhanced version of the “classic” Mission: SPACE.

  • If you think you’ve got “the right stuff,” take on the Orange Mission for a truly intense experience that lets you feel the force of an actual space launch en route to Mars. On this mission, you’ll dodge meteoroids, slingshot around the moon and attempt a precision landing on the Red Planet’s alien surface. This “mission” has been enhanced with new, HD video to make it even clearer!
  • Or, embark on the more family-friendly Green Mission – a new mission that takes you on an exciting orbit around Earth. On this amazing new adventure, you’ll take in sites like the Hawaiian Islands, Italy’s “boot” and the Northern Lights—as seen from space, of course—before finally landing at Kennedy Space Center in Florida. No matter which mission you choose, it’ll be a journey that’s totally out of this world.

In addition to all the “mission” updates, our partners at Walt Disney Imagineering have also made this attraction MORE family-friendly. Younger astronauts can now ride – the height restriction will be changed for the Green Mission side with the addition of new X-2 booster seats allowing children 40-44” to ride.

Opening day of the Epcot International Food & Wine Festival is earlier than ever this year – Aug. 31, with lots of new tastes and sips around World Showcase Lagoon and stretching in to Future World.

2017 Candlelight Processional Dinner Packages On Sale Today

As a part of Holidays Around the World at Epcot, the Candlelight Processional presents the traditional story of Christmas in truly spectacular fashion – with a celebrity narrator, a 50-piece orchestra and a mass choir.  And dining packages are available NOW to book!

Newcomers to the celebrity narrator spotlight this year include Daytime Television Legend Pat Sajak and TV star CCH Pounder, who was recently at Disney’s Animal Kingdom for the Grand Opening of Pandora – The World of Avatar.

Returning favorites include television, film and stage superstar Neil Patrick Harris, country megastar Trace Adkins and Contemporary Christian music artist Jaci Velasquez.

The processional is performed three times per night (5:00, 6:45 and 8:15 p.m.) during the holiday season at the America Gardens Theatre. These packages, available on select nights, include a delicious meal and a guaranteed seat for one of the Candlelight Processional performances. Availability is limited.

As with last year, in addition to lunch and dinner packages, breakfast options are available at some favorite restaurants in and near Epcot again this year like Akershus Royal Banquet Hall and The Garden Grill. Breakfast, lunch and dinner options are also available this year at Captain’s Grille at Disney’s Yacht Club Resort, with breakfast and dinner options being offered at Trattoria Al Fornoat Disney’s BoardWalk.

Candlelight Dining Packages for breakfast start at $35 plus tax per person for adults and $21 plus tax per person for children, ages 3-9. Candlelight Dining Packages for lunch and dinner start at $44 plus tax per person for adults and $15.50 plus tax per person for children, ages 3-9.

Holidays Around the World is an extravaganza of holiday entertainment, merchandise, food, beverages and festivities where guests can celebrate at Epcot throughout the holiday season. Time-honored traditions come alive through the sights and sounds of the countries of World Showcase, and live performances enliven the park throughout the day.

Independence Day is coming up, and the parks at Walt Disney World Resort are planning to celebrate our nation’s birthday with some star-spangled salutes to America!

If you’re visiting Walt Disney World Resort for the 4th of July, here are some highlights of the special entertainment planned for that day:

  • Magic Kingdom Park – “Disney’s Celebrate America! A Fourth of July Concert in the Sky” rockets into the air above – and all around – the park. This special, fireworks spectacular will be presented two nights in a row, at 9 p.m. on both July 3 and 4. You can also rock out each night to DJ dance parties in Tomorrowland and Frontierland, each a great location from which to catch the fireworks!
  • Epcot – On July 4, enjoy special evening concerts of great American songs by Voices of Liberty at 5:30 p.m., 6:45 p.m. and 8 p.m. at the America Gardens Theater. Throughout the day, you can also meet Mickey and the gang in patriotic attire outside The American Adventure, and at 9 p.m. that night “IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth” joins the celebration with the addition of a heart-pounding, all-American grand finale!
  • Disney’s Hollywood Studios – Spend the Fourth celebrating some of the great icons of American popular culture at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, with “The Music of Pixar LIVE! A Symphony of Characters” at 5 p.m., 6:45 p.m. and 8 p.m., the all-new “Disney Movie Magic” experience at 9 p.m. and “Star Wars: A Galactic Spectacular” which takes to the skies at 9:30 p.m. with fireworks, lasers, projection effects and more!

Disney Parks Best Bites: May 2017 New out-of-this-world menu items have premiered at at Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater Restaurant at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, including new burgers featuring a signature blend of beef. The Drive-In BBQ Burger has house-made barbecue sauce, bacon, cheddar, crispy-fried jalapeño and onion straws on a brioche bun. Vegetarians will love the new Falafel Burger with a crispy chickpea falafel patty, arugula, tomato, Tatziki sauce and red pepper aioli on a brioche bun.

After a year-long hiatus, Surf and Turf has returned to the menu at Narcoossee’s at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa! The dish pairs a six-ounce lobster tail with a six-ounce sirloin served with Yukon gold rustic mashed potatoes and roasted spring vegetables.

New specialty candy-inspired beverages are now available at Chef Mickey’s at Disney’s Contemporary Resort! Relax with the Gummy Oasis, which features gummy bears lounging in a delicious frozen pool of frozen cotton candy lemonade. The Watermelon Crush features Nerds® candy mixed into frozen watermelon and cherry lemonade. These drinks are also available in alcoholic versions for adults.

A new Specialty Hot Dog will debut June 4 at Casey’s Corner in Magic Kingdom Park! The Buffalo Chicken Dog features an all-beef hot dog loaded with shredded buffalo chicken, garlic-ranch dressing and celery.

Pizza lovers, rejoice – Frusta has landed at Cool Ship in Magic Kingdom Park. Pizza Frusta is a folded pizza-like snack that is easy to eat on-the-go! Choose from tomato and cheese or pepperoni and sausage.

There are many special numbers to celebrate as we announce the 22nd annual Epcot International Food & Wine Festival, opening Aug. 31 and running through Nov. 13 – that’s 75 days to sip, savor and enjoy one of America’s top food festivals (13 more than last year).

And to celebrate Epcot’s opening 35 years ago in 1982, there will be a record number of Marketplaces – 35 in all – stretching around World Showcase and into Future World.

While the Marketplaces play a starring role, we recommend planning ahead so you don’t miss your favorite celebrity chefs, hands-on culinary workshops and demonstrations at the Festival Center, Party for the Senses, or your favorite artists at one of the nightly Eat to the Beat concerts. Stay tuned. We’ll let you know when schedules are in place and bookings for specialty festival events open this summer.

22nd Annual Epcot International Food & Wine Festival Stretches to 75 Days – With Record 35 Marketplaces

Chefs are busy at work on new dishes for the Marketplaces, paired with wines, beers and ciders. We got a taste of the new crispy chicken with griddled cornbread and red-eye gravy for the Farm Fresh Marketplace and the spicy Korma Chicken with cucumber-tomato salad, almonds, cashews and warm naan bread from the India Marketplace– just two of the intriguing and delectable new tastes that will be in the 2017 cookbook. Another favorite was the charcuterie in a cone from the Spain Marketplace, perfect for strolling and tasting. For a favorite sweet, it’s back to India with the pistachio cardamom cake with a dollop of chocolate coconut mousse. And these are just a sampling of dozens of new tastes.

This year there are more family favorites, too, with the Ratatouille-inspired scavenger hunt back for another year as well as culinary demos and dishes geared toward kids’ palates.

We’re excited to share that as part of Shanghai Disney Resort’s first spring season, we recently kicked off a brand new Egg-tastic Celebration. This 10-day festival is filled with plenty of Easter-inspired events and entertainment, including a scavenger hunt, surprise appearances from favorite Disney characters and spring-themed food and beverage items.

This year, more than one hundred Disney characters are taking part in Hong Kong Disneyland’s spring celebration. See if you can spot your favorites in the Disney Friends Springtime Processional, exclusive to the resort. Mickey, Minnie and the rest of the gang will be dressed in their most dapper outfits atop parade floats adorned with beautiful blossoms.

Tokyo Disney Resort’s ever-popular Disney’s Easter program is back this year through June 14, featuring the mischievous Usatama bunny-eared egg characters known for causing mayhem all over both parks.

Did you know that April 12 is Disneyland Paris’ official anniversary date? The 25th anniversary celebration has already begun with a dazzling array of entertainment offerings including a new parade, two daytime castle shows and a nighttime spectacular. Catch a glimpse of our signature topiaries inspired by classic Disney characters and treat your taste buds to foods made from the freshest ingredients. Then hop over to Magic Kingdom Park, where you’ll find Mr. and Mrs. Easter Bunny greeting guests by Town Square through April 16. As a treat, a special Easter pre-parade will also appear before the Disney Festival of Fantasy Parade on April 15 and 16.

We’ve now managed to taste most of the artful dishes at the Food Studios around World Showcase Promenade (and highly recommend the wild mushroom risotto with aged Parmesan, truffle shavings and Zinfandel reduction at Masterpiece Kitchen), but the ever-changing visual and performance art brings us back for yet another weekend at the Epcot International Festival of the Arts.

Top of the list for this Friday to Monday is a seat for the Disney on Broadway Concert Series at America Gardens Theatre. Disney Theatrical stars Kissy Simmons and Alton Fitzgerald White will be performing songs from “The Lion King,” “Aida,” “Aladdin” and “The Little Mermaid.” Included with park admission, their concerts alone are worth a return visit.

But we’re also excited to see Disney Legend Marty Sklar, the guy who ran Walt Disney Imagineering for decades, presenting the art of Herb Ryman (the man whom Walt Disney asked to sketch the original drawings for Disneyland park) and Mary Blair (best known for her character designs for the “it’s a small world” attraction). Marty worked with them both, and has fascinating tales to share. Marty joined the company at Disneyland in 1956, so his tales are especially captivating to Disney fans. The complimentary seminar is at 4:30 p.m. Sunday; his Saturday seminar is sold out.

There are 18 seminars throughout the weekend, some complimentary, some with a fee. We’re taking note of the complimentary Handwritten Typography on Friday; Glass Blowing & Glass Art at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, and Food Styling 101 (learn how to make your Instagram photos shine!) at 1:30 p.m. Sunday.

Two others catching our eye are Olive Oil 101 at 11 a.m. Sunday ($39), and Venetian Mask Making at 11 a.m. Monday – you get to take home your own papier mâché art while learning the history behind mask making ($39).

You can now book dining packages that include reserved seating for some of the concerts – acts like Jon Secada, Night Ranger and The Pointer Sisters.

Anyway, the point is that you can pair some of your favorite Epcot restaurant meals with reserved seating for some of your favorite bands!

Figment Leads Kids on Artsy Adventure Around the ‘World’ During Epcot International Festival of the Arts

The Epcot International Festival of the Arts event is a celebration of the arts for the whole family, happening each weekend now through February 20. And there’s something special just for little ones during the festival: a clever scavenger hunt hosted by the lovable dragon, Figment! Figment’s Brush with the Masters Scavenger Hunt takes place around World Showcase, exposing kids to some of the world’s greatest masterpieces.

To begin the hunt, you first need to purchase a World Showcase map and stickers from a retail location at Epcot ($6.99). As you journey around each World Showcase Pavilion, you search for artwork that has Figment in the picture. He’s curious about art, and as you will see, he jumps right in to take a super close look. Once you spot the purple pal, just add the corresponding Figment location sticker on the map to the right Pavilion. After you have hunted for all the hiding Figments, turn in the map to a cast member at a retail location for a special surprise!
