Epcot Celebrates 35 Years With Disney Characters, Voices of Liberty & More

Epcot Celebrates 35 Years With Disney Characters, Voices of Liberty & More

This past weekend, thousands of Disney fans gathered at Epcot to celebrate the park’s 35th anniversary by watching a special ceremony that was highlighted with Disney characters, fun performances by the park’s most beloved musical acts and more.

During the ceremony, George A. Kalogridis, president of Walt Disney World Resort, spoke, honoring the park’s past and sharing excitement for its future.

“It’s been an amazing 35 years,” George said. “And as we look toward the future, there is so much more on the horizon.”

George was also joined onstage by Voices of Liberty and the Mariachi Cobre – two musical groups that debuted when the theme park opened on Oct. 1, 1982.

“Epcot has always been, and always will be, an optimistic celebration of the real world – brought to life through the magic of Disney,” George said. “I promise you the exciting plans we have on the horizon will honor Epcot’s rich legacy of creativity and innovation while continuing to exceed the expectations of our guests, for decades to come.

“The spirit of the expansion will continue to evolve Epcot to make it more timeless, more relevant, more family and more Disney, while staying true to its original vision.”

Already announced as part of this expansion is a new restaurant for the Mission: SPACE pavilion, inviting guests to dine above Earth, two new attractions inspired by “Ratatouille” and the “Guardians of the Galaxy” films, and an updated Circle-Vision film for the China pavilion in World Showcase that highlights the country’s splendor and majesty.

Today we have an exciting find from Disney’s video vault to share with you just in time for Epcot’s anniversary celebration – the original “The Dream Called EPCOT” film.

This film, which offers a look inside WED Enterprises during the “Imagineering” of EPCOT Center in the 1970s, originally ran on a loop in the EPCOT Preview Center at Magic Kingdom Park. The purpose of the film was to introduce a new kind of Disney theme park to guests, showcasing exciting experiences they could have in the park’s Future World and World Showcase areas.

The film offered sneak peaks at attraction models, renderings and animation for The Living Seas, Horizons, World of Motion, CommuniCore and Spaceship Earth, as well as early construction footage. It also offered a first-listen to some of the fun music composed for this new park, including songs like “It’s Fun to Be Free,” “Universe of Energy” and “Listen to the Land.”

Chef Buddy Valastro Brings Sweet Things to the 2017 Epcot International Food and Wine Festival

Chef Buddy Valastro Brings Sweet Things to the 2017 Epcot International Food and Wine Festival

Who knows their way around a dessert better than Carlo’s Bakery head and celebrated pastry Chef Buddy Valastro?

No one – that’s who!

And lucky for us, Buddy returns to this year’s Epcot International Food and Wine Festival – with a sumptuous demo and discussion that is sure to be a taste- and crowd-pleaser.

Anyone who knows – or knows of – Buddy knows that family plays an integral part in everything he does. Carlo’s is a legendary family business and, as seen in its TV show, shines the spotlight on the warmth, heart – and, of course, sometimes craziness – of three generations of family working together.

Disney caught up with Chef Buddy at Carlo’s in Jersey City to get a sneak peek into his festival presentation and ask him about what he and his family love to do – and eat – while at Walt Disney World.

Chef Buddy will be appearing at the Festival as part of the “What’s Cookin’ With” series of celebrity chef demos and discussions. He will be at Epcot Sunday, Nov. 12.

For the first time ever, the 2017 “Disney Food & Wine Festival Coast-to-Coast Cookbook” takes you coast to coast to both Disney festivals – the Disney California Adventure Food & Wine Festival that happens in the spring at the Disneyland Resort, and the Epcot International Food & Wine Festival, happening now through Nov. 13 at Walt Disney World Resort.

And since the Epcot festival is just under way, we’re sharing a new recipe from the Africa Marketplace, one of 35 Global Marketplaces at the 22nd Epcot International Food & Wine Festival.

2017 Disney Food & Wine Cookbook Shares Recipes Coast to Coast

Generously seasoned, this flavorful, vegetarian version of a hearty African stew gets even more protein from quinoa and yogurt toppings. You can toast the naan for chips, but the pillowy flatbread is just as delicious simply served warm on the side for sopping up the stew.

The Disney wine experts recommend pairing this dish with a Pinotage; a medium-bodied red wine with red fruit aromas and a touch of smokiness. Bon appétit!

9 Dishes You Don’t Want to Miss at the 2017 Epcot International Food & Wine Festival at Walt Disney World Resort

9 Dishes You Don’t Want to Miss at the 2017 Epcot International Food & Wine Festival at Walt Disney World Resort

We’re counting down the days to Aug. 31 and the opening of the Epcot International Food & Wine Festival. And with 75 days this year, there’s plenty of time to sip and taste your way through the 35 Marketplaces circling World Showcase Lagoon and stretching into Future World.

Still, the sheer amount of food and drink can be overwhelming, so we’ll give you a head start by sharing our favorites from the multiple chef tastings of new dishes and from working on the new cookbook for this year’s festival.

In no special order, here are nine new tastes that we recommend not missing at this year’s festival:

9 Dishes You Don’t Want to Miss at the 2017 Epcot International Food & Wine Festival at Walt Disney World Resort

1. Crispy Chicken with Griddled Cornbread and Red-Eye Gravy at the Farm Fresh Marketplace is the trifecta of Southern cooking.
2. Sounds kooky, but the Teriyaki-glazed SPAM® Hash with Potatoes, Peppers, Onions and Spicy Mayonnaise is a winner in the Hawai’i Marketplace.
3. The Bougatsa at the Greece Marketplace is ethereal: warm phyllo strudel with sweet vanilla custard, lemon honey syrup and cinnamon. East dessert first!
4. The Madras Red Curry with Roasted Cauliflower, Baby Carrots, Chickpeas, and Basmati Rice in the India Marketplace is vegetarian, gluten friendly and delicious.
5. Spain Marketplace gives us the perfect carry-around nibble: Charcuterie in a Cone with a selection of imported Spanish meats, cheeses and olives with an herb vinaigrette.

9 Dishes You Don’t Want to Miss at the 2017 Epcot International Food & Wine Festival at Walt Disney World Resort

6. Spain gave us another new favorite, the Sweet Olive Oil Cake with Powdered Sugar and Lemon Curd. Sublime.
7. If you love the Cheddar Cheese soup at Le Cellier, the Warm Irish Cheddar Cheese and Stout Dip with Irish Brown Bread at the Ireland Marketplace will make you happy. Nicely pairs with the new Guinness Blonde American Lager.
8. We’re fans of the Cauliflower Risotto with Pulled Chicken, Artichokes, Spinach, Parmesan Cheese and Aged Balsamic at the new Almond Orchard Hosted by Blue Diamond Almond Breeze. (They’re also pouring Dom Pérignon and Vueve Cliquot at this Marketplace.)

9 Dishes You Don’t Want to Miss at the 2017 Epcot International Food & Wine Festival at Walt Disney World Resort

9. Scallop fans will love the Seared Scallops with Roasted Corn and Butterbean Succotash and Chili-chipotle Butter Sauce at the new Coastal Eats Marketplace. They’re pairing the dish with a nice pinot gris from Oregon.

The Epcot International Food & Wine Festival dates are Aug. 31- Nov. 13. The Party for the Senses grand tasting events, signature dinners and other special wine and culinary programs require reservations and separate event admission.
