More Guest Experiences and Dining Options Coming to Disney’s Coronado Springs and Caribbean Beach Resorts

More Guest Experiences and Dining Options Coming to Disney’s Coronado Springs and Caribbean Beach Resorts

Whenever it’s time to share exciting news about a new expansion project, I remember one of my favorite Walt Disney quotes. “We keep moving forward, opening up new doors and doing new things, because we’re curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.”

Today, we are thrilled to share with you that changes are on the horizon at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort over the next two years and let me tell you, there is a lot to be excited about!

The expansion at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort will include a new 15-story tower that will add 500 rooms, featuring suites and concierge level services. The resort will also refurbish its current resort rooms and transform its landscape with floating gardens and an island oasis that connects the resort through a series of bridges.

The new tower overlooking Lago Dorado, the resort’s centerpiece lake, will allow guests to experience something truly unique, rooftop dining with panoramic views of popular nighttime fireworks from nearby Disney theme parks.

Also during this exciting time, Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort will be reimagined with new additions to the resort’s current marketplace, Centertown, including new waterfront dining and retail shopping areas. This centralized location will offer the resort’s guests more convenient access to services, amenities and dining.

At Walt Disney World Resort, many of our guest’s magical memories start at one of Disney’s 27-themed resorts each and every day, which is why we will always continue to “move forward” and “create new experiences” that are integral to the overall resort experience!

We can’t wait to share more with you as these projects come to life!

The beauty of Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa is that it is truly timeless. Inspired by the Victorian-era beach resorts built along Florida’s east coast during the turn of the century, the Grand remains the crown jewel at Walt Disney World Resort.

Smart Refillable Mugs Introduced at Walt Disney World Resorts

Walt Disney World hotels will soon be implementing a refillable mug system that has recently been tested at Disney’s All-Star Sports Resort. The new program, called Rapid Fill, will begin this month at all hotels featuring self-serve beverage stations.

Smart Refillable Mugs Introduced at Walt Disney World Resorts

The three All-Star Resorts will be the first to roll out the new program, which will offer guests a refillable mug that contains an RFID chip that can be activated for a pre-selected number of days. The mugs can then be filled with drinks at any beverage station only during those designated days.

How Does It Work?

Guests can buy the Rapid Fill mugs at resort counter service locations and gift shops. Days are calculated by calendar date, not the time of day.

Currently the refillable mugs cost $15.49 at the resorts and can only be used at the same location (via the honor system) as long as you are a resort guest.

The mugs cannot be used during follow-up visits to Walt Disney World resorts and they may not be used at the water parks but may be filled at any resort with self-serve beverage stations. The new mugs will also be included with the Disney Dining Plan.

Smart Refillable Mugs Introduced at Walt Disney World Resorts

Here you are just some of the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) you may have about the “Rapid Fill” mugs (via Orlando Park News):

– What’s the difference between the current Resort Refillable mugs and the Rapid Fill mugs?
The Rapid Fill mugs offer Guests flexibility by allowing them to choose one, two, or three days of refills or for their entire length of stay. The RFID (radio frequency identification) chip installed in the mug alerts Guests as to how many days they have remaining on their mug. The program was tested in 2011 at Disney’s All Star Resorts and is similar to the technology currently used in mugs sold at Disney water parks.
– Can non-Walt Disney World Resort Guests purchase and use the mug?
Yes. Anyone can purchase and use the Rapid Fill mugs at any resort self-service beverage station.
– Can the Rapid Fill mugs be used in multiple resort hotels?
Yes. The Rapid Fill mugs may be enjoyed at any resort hotel self-service beverage station.
– Can I bring the same Rapid Fill mug each time I visit the Walt Disney World Resort?
No, past mugs cannot be activated for future visits. Guests who purchase the Length of Stay option for Rapid Fill program can use the mug for fourteen (14) consecutive days after activation. Guests can extend the mug beyond the 14-day Length of Stay option as long as it’s still within the current length of stay.
– If the mug is activated for first use at 5 p.m., will the one day count until 5 p.m. the next day?
No, the day will end at 11:59 p.m. that night. Each day is a calendar day (12:01 a.m. – 11:59 p.m.), not a 24-hour period. Whenever the mug is used for the first time, regardless of  time of day, the mug will expire for that day at midnight.
– Can the current water park mug be used in resorts?
No. The current water park mug is only valid in water parks, with no resort add-on option. However, Guests soon  will be able to add a water park option for their mug.
– Can Guests purchase a Resort Rapid Fill mug anywhere at Walt Disney World Resort?
Resort Rapid Fill mugs may only be purchased at Walt Disney World Resort hotels with self-service beverage  stations.
– If a Guest prefers not to purchase the Rapid Fill mug, can they purchase a regular mug instead?
The Rapid Fill mugs will be the only refillable mugs available at this time. Guests may choose to purchase
nonrefillable paper cups for their drinks if they prefer.
– Can mugs be microwaved?
No, the mug cannot be microwaved.
– What is the price of the Rapid Fill mug?
The prices of the mugs vary based on Guest preference for number of days for refills, as follows:
  • $8.99 for 1 day
  • $11.99 for 2 days
  • $14.99 for 3 days
  • $17.99 for length of stay (4+ days)

‘Limited Time Magic’ Independence Week Celebration at Disney Parks Begins Monday

It’s almost time to kick off our weeklong celebration of America’s birthday at Disney Parks. So, we thought we’d share a quick reminder of what’s planned beginning on Monday at the Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort.

Yes, next week is the week to see amazing fireworks on both coasts. Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World Resort will be saluting our nation’s birth with “Disney’s Celebrate America! A Fourth of July Concert in the Sky” — a fireworks spectacular that rockets into the air every night during Independence Week.

  • Magic Kingdom Park – The fireworks spectacular takes place at 9 p.m. on July 3 and 4, and 10 p.m. on July 1, 2, 5, 6 and 7.
  • Disneyland park – The fireworks spectacular will be held each night at 9:30 p.m. during Independence Week – July 1-7.

Every evening at the Disneyland Resort, you can also wear a pair of illuminated Mouse Ears and “Glow with the Show” during performances of “Celebrate America!” and the patriotic pre-show to “World of Color” at Disney California Adventure park.

Also, expect to see plenty of patriotic merchandise available across the Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resorts, including red, white and blue Mickey T-shirts and plush, trading pins, light-up star necklaces and patriotic Duffy the Disney Bear costumes.

There is much more planned at the parks, and we included some of the details in our earlier Independence Week story.

Check back here later today to see a story featuring some of the treats on the menu from July 1-7.

Things get hopping at Disneyland park as well on Monday, when the Easter Bunny stops by to greet guests in Town Square. Each day, the Easter Bunny will join some of his long-eared Disney friends, along with the Dapper Dans and Mickey and Minnie Mouse, for a Bunny Hop dance on Main Street, U.S.A.

The Story Behind Windows on Main Street, U.S.A. at Disneyland Park Honoring Roger Broggie

When we visit a Disney Park, did you know that there are clues all over as to the people who helped Walt Disney create all that magic?

One great example of this are all the windows on Main Street USA.  Those clever and comical windows often make reference to a creative influence behind the park’s creation.

Such is the case with Disneyland’s Main Street USA and this window honoring Roger Broggie, without whom much of Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resorts would look drastically different.

Here is Roger’s window in Disneyland…

Broggie was honored with a Window on Main Street, U.S.A. , at Disneyland park on March 30, 2007. His window is above the Magic Shop and fittingly refers to him as “Roger Broggie, Shopmaster” and “Advisor to the Magic Makers.”

The Disneyland Railroad was inspired by Walt Disney’s love of trains. Since he first conceived the idea of Disneyland  Park, every concept design had one thing in common: “… it will be surrounded by a train,” said Walt. Roger Broggie, the first Walt Disney Studio employee to be recruited for the hand-picked team at WED Enterprises (now called Walt Disney Imagineering), was instrumental in helping Walt fulfill this dream.

Hired in 1939 as a master machinist, one of Broggie’s first assignments was the installation of the multiplane camera at the Burbank studio. Because he was familiar with fabricating small camera parts with great precision, Walt approached him to create a one-eighth scale live steam locomotive. Broggie helped create the Lilly Belle , a miniature live steam engine named for Walt’s wife, Lillian. A replica of the Lilly Belle is currently on display in the Disneyland Main Street Train Station. In 1949, Broggie helped Walt build his miniature trains in the Studio Machine Shop and later installed the Carolwood Pacific Railroad in the backyard of Walt’s Holmby Hills home.

In 1950, Broggie was promoted to head of the Studio Machine Shop and he became the transportation specialist. As plans for Disneyland progressed, he oversaw the development of the Santa Fe and Disneyland Railroad, the Monorail system  and Matterhorn Bobsleds . He also worked on new processes and techniques such as Circle-Vision 360, a motion picture format with screens that completely surround the audience, and “Project Little Man” which became the prototype for Audio-Animatronics technology.

While working on “Project Little Man,” Broggie and fellow Imagineer Wathel Rogers constructed a 9-inch-tall figure of a moving, talking man that mimicked vaudevillian tap-dancing using cams, cables and tubes. The original figure is on display as part of the D23 Presents Treasures of the Walt Disney Archives exhibit at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library & Museum through April 30, 2013.

Broggie was honored with a Window on Main Street, U.S.A. , at Disneyland park on March 30, 2007 fittingly refers to him as “Roger Broggie, Shopmaster” and “Advisor to the Magic Makers.”Broggie is known for epitomizing the essence of Walt Disney Imagineering – the blending of creative imagination and technical know-how. His legacy lives on at Disney as his grandson Garry (son of Imagineer Roger Broggie, Jr.) carries on the tradition as a third-generation machinist and supervisor at the Disney Studio machine shop.

Broggie was honored with a Window on Main Street, U.S.A. , at Disneyland park on March 30, 2007. His window is above the Magic Shop and fittingly refers to him as “Roger Broggie, Shopmaster” and “Advisor to the Magic Makers.”

Additionally, he has a window dedicated to him at Magic Kingdom Park  in the Walt Disney World Resort , and on October 21, 2003, Walt Disney World Railroad Steam Engine #3, was re-dedicated as the Roger E. Broggie in his honor. In 1990, Broggie was named a Disney Legend .

Meet Jewelry Designer Petra Azar on February 9 & 10 at Tren-D in Downtown Disney Marketplace

With Valentine’s Day only a few weeks away, you may have spent some time at Magic Kingdom Park getting ideas for gifts. If so, you might have found three unique necklaces at Uptown Jewelers on Main Street, U.S.A., which you had never seen before. They didn’t have traditional neck clasps; instead, they used magnets to pull the two sides together. These necklaces were designed by Petra Azar from Studio Petra Azar.

Meet Jewelry Designer Petra Azar on February 9 & 10 at Tren-D in Downtown Disney Marketplace

“I always admired Walt Disney’s vision to invent an oasis of romance, imagination and adventure,” explained Petra. “When asked to create a jewelry collection for Disney Parks, I saw it as my challenge to invent something unique and innovative. This was a tall order because to capture the Disney spirit, it had to be a piece of jewelry nobody else had made before.”

Meet Jewelry Designer Petra Azar on February 9 & 10 at Tren-D in Downtown Disney Marketplace

Petra’s favorite design is the “River of Love” pendant. It is half black resin and half sterling silver with a row of white cubic zirconia stones in the shape of a winding river down the heart’s center. The “Heart of Disney” pendant is solid sterling silver and contains an extendable chain (you can adjust it to either 18 inches or 36 inches). Finally, “Minnie Bow” is a medium-sized sterling silver pendant that features sparkling polka dots in white cubic zirconia stones. There is also a genuine onyx drop dangling from the center.

Meet Jewelry Designer Petra Azar on February 9 & 10 at Tren-D in Downtown Disney Marketplace

“I received a ‘utility patent’ for the [magnetic clasps], which is quite rare in the jewelry industry,” continued Petra. “The philosophical and emotional thoughts I put into my designs are important to me, but I think most women will appreciate the practicality of the magnetic clasp just as much.”

These necklaces are currently available at select locations in both Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resorts. There are no plans at this time to carry them via the Disney Parks online store.

We invite you to attend a special event with Petra Azar on February 9-10 in Tren-D at the Downtown Disney Marketplace. She will be meeting with guests from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. each day.

Mickey Check for Kids’ Meals Debuts at Disneyland Resort, Walt Disney World Resort

From an udon noodle bowl at Carthay Circle Restaurant at Disney California Adventure park to turkey pot pie at Cinderella’s Royal Table at Magic Kingdom Park, the new Mickey Check is now featured on kids’ menus in both quick-service and table-service restaurants across Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World Resort.

Mickey Check for Kids’ Meals Debuts at Disneyland Resort, Walt Disney World Resort

Following the introduction earlier this month at Be Our Guest Restaurant in Magic Kingdom Park at Walt Disney World Resort, the expansion of the Mickey Check helps families easily find nutritious choices, part of an ongoing program that launched in 2006 with nutrition guidelines. The Mickey Check makes it even easier to identify healthier food options in all of the Disney theme parks and resorts.

Choices that receive the Mickey Check must meet Disney Nutrition Guidelines that limit calories, saturated fat, sodium and sugar. For the Disney chefs, it’s been a fun challenge to tweak menus. For example, Blue Bayou in Disneyland park now offers seared salmon, spaghetti, broccolini and fresh fruit for kids. At Le Cellier Steakhouse in the Canada Pavilion at Epcot, there’s grilled sirloin with green beans and brown rice. (Kids’ Complete Meals must be ordered without substitutions and include at least three of the following food groups: fruits and vegetables; low-fat dairy; whole grains or lean protein, beans, eggs and nuts.)

Mickey Check for Kids’ Meals Debuts at Disneyland Resort, Walt Disney World Resort

While new to table-service restaurants, the Mickey Check also appears on some Disney-licensed food products sold at retail locations, on qualifying recipes at Disney.com and Family.com, and on menus at quick-service restaurants at Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resorts.

New Pins to Collect or Trade Coming to Disney Parks in 2013

New Pins to Collect or Trade Coming to Disney Parks in 2013

When I served as project manager for Disney Pin Trading, I was often asked by guests which pins they should collect or trade. My best advice for someone starting a Disney pin collection is to pick a certain theme and trade for what you like. For years, we have offered mini-collections that are an easy way to jump start a collection. I spoke with Jeanne Lewis, merchandiser for Disney pins, about some of these new collections arriving in 2013.

“We have new limited edition pin collections coming to Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resorts next year,” explained Jeanne. “Some pins will be released each month, while others may be released every other month or once each quarter. I like these mini-collections because they have one consistent story. I also like making these pins extra special by adding different elements like stained glass or sculpted metal.”

new limited edition pin collections coming to Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resorts

Fans at Disneyland will see the next chapter of the “Piece of Disneyland Resort History” collection. For this series, Jeanne acquired costume pieces from the Creative Costuming team from various Audio-Animatronics figures. I like the “it’s a small world” pin that features pieces of the Japanese girl’s obi sash from the attraction’s final scene. Each pin in the series will have an edition size of 1,000.

The “Window to the Magic” collection is also coming to Disneyland Resort. This pin series features scenes from classic Disney animated films where magical things took place by windows. The pins in this series will have edition sizes of 1,000.

The “Window to the Magic” collection

For Walt Disney World Resort, there will be a pin-of-the-month collection called “Good Luck / Bad Luck.” This playful collection shows there are two sides to every story – lucky and unlucky. I thought the Flower pin was funny (poor Flower!). The edition size for these pins will be 1,000.

For Walt Disney World Resort, there will be a pin-of-the-month collection called “Good Luck / Bad Luck.”

I convinced Jeanne to let me tease two new surprise pin collections for 2013. There will be six different pins in each collection, released at various dates throughout the year. The Walt Disney World Resort collection is called “Remember When” and gives a nod to classic Disney attractions and characters. The Disneyland Resort collection has images of vintage Disney characters in stylized crests. The surprise pins will each have an edition size of 750.

Treat Yourself to a Halloween Transformation at Disney Parks

It’s hard to believe kids are already heading back to school or will be within the next month. Where did the time go? Which means one thing, Halloween is right around the corner. That’s why in the coming weeks Disney Parks Blog author Steven Miller and I will be sharing some of the many “tricks” and “treats” that we have up our sleeves this year, as we debut some of the new Halloween merchandise set to hit store shelves at both the Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resorts.

Before we share all of these “boo-tiful” new items with you, here’s a quick reminder about some things to keep on your radar. If you are looking to scare up some fun this Halloween, then Mickey’s Halloween Party is the ticket. What better way to celebrate the season than to trick-or-treat throughout the ultimate Disney neighborhood, view Halloween Screams fireworks spectacular, meet some of your favorite Disney characters decked out in festive Halloween attire and enjoy many of your favorite Disneyland park attractions? The best part is – if you buy early, you save. Where will I be? First in line for Space Mountain Ghost Galaxy, of course.

Halloween Transformation at Disney Parks

With The Happiest Place on Earth about to get a little spookier, there’s only one question that remains … what look should you dress up as this year? And there’s no better place to start than with a transformation, especially for those of you thinking about becoming a Pirate or Pirate Princess. If you haven’t joined Jack’s crew yet, it’s time to climb aboard because The Pirates League ship has set sail. Reservations opened today! Of course, for our little princesses and valiant knights, Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique is brewing up something a little more be’witch’ing, while Studio Disney 365 is sure to give you a case of “Night Fright.”

What other Halloween costumes and goodies are coming your way this season? I guess you’ll have to wait and see … it will be a ghoulish delight!
