Planning a Walt Disney World Vacation
Hey Mickey What Happened?
This family from Michigan and their experience that we are about to
share with you is not only sad but also far too common.
We encountered this family of four from Michigan while waiting in
line at Splash Mountain. The wait this day was particularly long and
as sometimes happens I began a conversation with the Dad. Nothing of
importance was discussed just a polite and simple conversation. A
few moments after we had broken off our conversation and while he
was talking with his wife they suddenly began yelling at each other.
After this short outburst they were not talking to each other at
all and had positioned the two kids between them serving as a
symbolical truce.
After a few minutes had past I asked the Dad if everything was
alright. He said nothing at first but about a minute later he
answered. “I can’t understand it. We got up at 7 o’clock, which is
early, after all I am on vacation. I forgot that there was only one
tiny bathroom and it was a quarter after eight by the time we got out
of the room. We stopped at IHOP and it was a quarter to ten before we
got out of there. Then I missed the turn onto World Drive and I was
half way to Tampa before I could turn around. I finally got on World
Drive and I had to wait in line to pay to park my car, then I waited
in line to get on a tram that took me to another line to get on a
monorail. And because I didn’t have our tickets I waited in another
line to buy them. All of that so I could finally wait in another
line at the turnstiles and get in the park.
It was almost 12 o’clock
before we finally got to walk down Main Street. We have been on only
two rides before this one and we have waited in line for an hour at
each of them. I just mentioned to my wife that maybe after this ride
we could go back to the motel go for a swim and I could get a beer
and relax a little. She let me know that "they were staying with me,
without me or despite me, and that the kids had waited years for
this and I could go wait out in the car.” He continued with this
defeated look on his face, “I don’t get it. I have spent almost
three hundred dollars today and everyone is treating me like I’m the
bad guy”
Unfortunately scenarios similar to this are played out everyday
throughout Walt Disney World. So, what went wrong? The only thing
our unsuspecting friend from Michigan knew about Walt Disney World
was approximately where it was, approximately how much it cost and
approximately when it opened.
Is every vacation at this mega attraction doomed before it starts
like this poor guy’s trip was? Nothing could be more untrue.
Thousands of travelers each day continue to visit Walt Disney World
and enjoy a wonderful and magical time. I have taken my family at
various peak times of the year and even on one occasion my then
eight month pregnant wife on the Fourth of July and have returned
with wonderful memories of our trips.
So what’s the difference between a disastrous vacation and a
enjoyable trip? The answer is simple. Planning.
In a series of articles we are going to look at all aspects of
planning a trip to Walt Disney World. So join us in our next issue
as we begin planning a trip to “The Most Magical Place on Earth”.
