Hawaii Travel Basics

Required Travel Documents: Canadian citizens
need either a birth certificate with a raised seal or a voter registration card
with a photo ID (a driver's license is not enough) as proof of citizenship for
entry into the United States. Canadians under 16 need notarized permission from
both parents. All citizens of other countries must have a valid passport to
enter the United States if they are staying less than 90 days and have an onward
or return ticket.
Local Language: American English is the primary language spoken. The
Hawaiian language is also spoken. Pidgin English is used by many locals.
Electricity: The standard for the United States is 110 volts. Visitors
from outside North America will require a transformer or converter.
Calling Codes: The area code for all of Hawaii is 808. For local numbers
on each island dial the seven-digit phone number. For calls to outer islands,
dial 1, then 808, then the seven-digit number. For long-distance calls to the
mainland, dial 1, then the area code, then the seven-digit number. For
long-distance calls outside the U.S., it is usually necessary to dial 011 and
the country code, any local codes, then the phone number. Dial 0 to reach an
operator and for directory assistance, dial 1-411.
Time Zones: All the islands observe Hawaii Time Zone (Greenwich Mean Time
minus 10 hours). Hawaii is five hours behind New York and two hours behind
California and Western Canada. Hawaii does not observe Daylight Savings Time.
Climate: Hawaii seems to have no distinct seasons with sunshine and mild
temperatures all year. Summer is officially from May to mid-October. In winter,
from late October to mid April, the weather is cooler with a chance of showers.
August and September are the hottest and most humid months, with temperatures in
the upper 80s (Fahrenheit) (about 30 degrees Celsius) and sometimes even going
above 90 degrees Fahrenheit (32 degrees Celsius). The coolest and wettest months
are February and March, when evening temperatures sometimes drop to the low 70s
(22 degrees Celsius). Normally, the leeward sides of the islands are warmer and
drier than the windward sides.
Potable Water: Tap water is good, and bottled water is readily available.
Currency/Money: Currency is the US dollar (USD). Paper bills are in
denominations of $1, $5, $10, $20 and $50. Coin denominations are 1 cent, 5
cents, 10 cents, 25 cents, fifty cents, and $1. |
