City Walk

In 1999 Universal Orlando unabashedly took a page out of the Disney’s central Florida tourist trade manual and aimed squarely at their Downtown Disney success.

Designing it’s own combination of unique dining, nighttime entertainment and shopping Universal has established itself as a major player in the Beyond the Theme Park visitor market.

With the introduction of City Walk and it’s 10 restaurants, 4 dance clubs, half a dozen live music venues and 11 or more stores Universal has not only given guests some pretty good eateries and nighttime entertainment options, but also an ever growing sense that they need not search elsewhere for a cash register to deposit their vacation dollars into.

Parking is available in Universals parking garage and is $7.00 before 6:00pm and there is no charge after 6:00pm.

Unlike Pleasure Island at Downtown Disney there is no charge for access to the City Walk’s street entertainment, but there will be a cover charge for the individual nightclubs that is usually enforced after 9:00pm. In the past guests have been able to purchase a bracelet that grants them access that night to all the clubs for about $8 otherwise it is usually around a $5 cover for each club.

Dining at Universal City Walk is somewhat loud and can at times even be a little in your face. A case in point is the NASCAR Café where guests are treated not only to some of there favorite delicacies, but also to a full size race car that will intermittently start up and throttle to a noise level that would make a NASCAR pit boss sit up and take notice. But despite the sensory overload found at NBA City, which has more TV’s than a Sears TV department and the continuous Latin beat at the Latin Quarter the food is above average and hey after all you can eat at Denny’s back home.

Two of the more subdued, at least in terms of their decibel levels are Emerils’ Orlando and Pastmore’.

Emeril’s of Emeril Lagasse fame offers some true New Orleans cuisine of the first order. Reservations here are a must, so call from home before you leave and when you arrive you will be treated to some great food. Pastmore’s is an Italian restaurant that will provide some familiar dishes and a comfortable atmosphere.

If shopping is one of your main activities you may find that you will run out of shops before you have gotten your fix. There are only around a dozen to browse through but with their slightly quirky inventory they make for a fun if not brief diversion.
