Restaurant
Akershus
Located in Epcot - Norway Pavilion in World Showcase
Dinner - January 2004
The inviting and comfortable atmosphere of the dining area, which
affords guests more space between the tables than is typically
found at other World Showcase restaurants, was a good start to the
night. Only a few moments had passed after being seated, when our
server Camilla greeted us. As with other Epcot®
World Showcase
restaurants, the wait staff is comprised of young people recruited
from the host country that spend the next year working at the Walt
Disney World®
resort.
We were quick to learn that the dining experience offered at dinner
differs from the one offered to guests at lunch. Both lunch and
dinner guests are invited to help themselves to the buffet that
features salads, hand-carved deli meats, authentic cheeses, smoked
and cured seafood specialties, home-styled herrings, and
freshly-baked breads. What we had not anticipated was that dinner
guests are also presented with a menu that features six traditional
Norwegian entrees, including Trio Grilled Sausages, Soused Fresh
Mackerel, Grilled Atlantic Salmon, Venison Stew, Crispy Breast of
Chicken, and Hearty Viking Favorites. The side dishes offered are:
Seasonal Vegetables, Boiled Potatoes, Mashed Rutabaga, and
Meatballs. Guests will be served their choice in small (almost
sampler size) portions and are encouraged to order as many of these
entrees as they desire. The end result is that you can experience,
and even experiment with some choices and tastes that you might
otherwise not have tried.
Between my dinner companion and myself, we managed to treat
ourselves to five of the six entrees offered. There will be a quiz
at the end of this review to determine which entrée was shunned.
If I had to name our favorite for this night it would be the Grilled
Atlantic Salmon. Now I have found salmon on virtually every menu at
Walt Disney World, (which has led a friend of mine to speculate that
Disney has managed to farm raise them at the Living Seas Pavilion),
but never had I tasted a better-prepared dish than I had here. A
very close second would have been both the Trio Grilled Sausages and
the Venison Stew. The Hearty Viking Favorites included vegetables,
potatoes, rutabaga, and some very tasty meatballs that were a nice
compliment to the main entrees.
By the end of the night we were both surprised and delighted we had stuck to our guns and experienced this gastronomic
pleasure from another land.
We will be back and will be sure to try the Crispy Breast of
Chicken.
