Located at Disney Contemporary Resort
An All You Care to Eat Character Dinner Buffet

As we got off the elevator and headed to Chef Mickey’s located on the Fourth Floor Concourse of Disney’s Contemporary Resort it seemed noticeably more crowded than usual, on this Fourth of July evening. It had started to rain very hard about 5:30pm and the heavy downpour had obviously chased a lot of people out of the parks.

We walked over to Chef Mickey’s with our 7:15pm priority seating in hand and we were faced with a line of twenty or more close friends of Mickey all waiting for a table. Disney’s clockwork efficiency made even this line move quickly and much to the cast members credit allowing our party to be seated within ten minutes of our priority seating time. Our hostess offered an explanation of the buffet and how the characters would make their way around the room, as she directed us to a table near a window overlooking the Magic Kingdom. This is all pretty typical of a character dining experience at Disney, however Chef Mickey’s has taken “character dining” a step further.

Beginning with Dale who stood by at the front and offered a character encounter for the kids who were waiting with their families to be seated and ending with Goofy who was in charge of the cupcake bar where kids make their own dessert. In between the encounters with Dale and Goofy our table was treated to rounds by all the characters, from Chef Mickey himself to Minnie Mouse, Goofy, and Chip & Dale. In addition there was a Chef Mickey specialty of the house served up called “celebration”. During this outburst of song and “celebration” all the characters paraded through the dining area and dinner guests were encouraged to join in by waving their green cloth napkins in the air to the beat of the piped in music.

The buffet offerings were extensive including carved meats, chef’s fresh catch, pastas, several vegetables, soups, salads, breads and a quite impressive dessert bar. In short we were not disappointed in our meal, but it’s worth mentioning that the food is not the draw here. What you are paying for is the character encounter and here is where this dining experience earns its reputation as a “celebration” of fun.
