Meet BB-8 this Spring at Disney’s Hollywood Studios

When you visit Disney’s Hollywood Studios® at Walt Disney World® Resort this spring, you will have more Star Wars fun to look forward to as BB-8, the loyal droid from Star Wars: The Force Awakens, begins character greetings at the park’s Star Wars Launch Bay.

In addition to character greetings, the location also offers you the chance to explore galleries full of treasured memorabilia and authentic replicas of large-scale Star Wars artifacts, including some from the latest film in the franchise, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

And just a few months ago, the park’s Star Tours – The Adventures Continue attraction began offering randomized destinations, making different planetary destinations possible for every galactic journey.

Special New Year’s Eve Celebrations at Disneyland Resort

From a New Year’s Cupcake at Jolly Holiday Bakery in Disneyland park to the Napa Rose New Year’s Eve Bash, the Disneyland Resort will ring in 2014 with something fun for everyone.

New Year's Eve at Disneyland Resort

Let’s start with the Napa Rose celebration. Actually, there are two: an early seating from 5:30 – 7 p.m. with a four-course dinner (think grilled hand-harvested sea scallops and 28-day-aged prime New York beef … Chef Andrew Sutton’s fabulous Wine Country Feast of seasonal classics) and festive decorations. Cost is $125 plus tax and gratuity. The perfect way to start the party early when you have plans later in the evening.

The late seating commences with bubbly at 8:15 p.m. and a dinner dance party with live music – they’re adding a dance floor in the lounge area with hundreds of silver, gold, red and black balloons to create a magical party. Plus hats and party favors, of course.

Napa Rose Restaurant Disneyland resort

Start with honeyed profiteroles with goat cheese and cranberry jam, followed by imported Osetra caviar parfait layered with Skuna Bay salmon tartare, cucumber pearls and crème fraîche. You’ll move on to three more courses before a 30-minute “intermission” for dancing, followed by two more courses (including dessert). It’s all perfectly timed to take you to midnight. Dancing goes ‘til 1 a.m.

The five-course tasting menu is $220 plus tax and gratuity (no children’s pricing), plus $65 for a flight of world-class wines for pairing. Chef Sutton also has a delicious vegetarian menu.

For reservations, call Kingdom Magic at 866-972-6244 or speak to your travel planner. Valet is complimentary.

(surf and turf with shrimp and sirloin steak); at French Market (roasted pork chop with Calvados applesauce, braised greens and sweet potato soufflé); at Blue Bayou (a seafood pot pie); and Cafe Orleans (flat iron steak with bone marrow demi-glace, garlic mashed potatoes and acorn squash).
    • Flo’s V8 Café at Disney California Adventure park will offer meat loaf with Coca-Cola barbecue sauce and two sides.
    • Steakhouse 55 at the Disneyland Hotel has a prixe fixe, three-course menu for $65 that includes spinach salad with warm bacon vinaigrette, filet and lobster and chocolate paté.

Especially the New Year’s Cupcake with dark chocolate cake, Nutella filling, Belgian white chocolate frosting with black and silver decorations, silver disco dust, a chocolate Mickey, chocolate truffle and bow tie? That’s a party on a plate! Look for it at Jolly Holiday Bakery, Fidler, Fifer & Practical Cafe and Pacific Wharf Café at Disney California Adventure park, and White Water Snacks at Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa.

Kermit and Miss Piggy Topiaries Will Debut at 21st Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival

Kermit the Frog will find it is easy being green when his artfully-crafted character topiary debuts during the 21st Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival presented by HGTV March 5 to May 18, 2014 at Walt Disney World Resort.  With flamboyance to spare, a floral Miss Piggy will join Kermit and his blooming banjo in the World Showcase topiary display.

Nearly 100 topiaries will animate the landscape during the 75 days when Epcot transforms to a rainbow-hued wonderland of sweeping gardens and exhibits. Back for a second year: outdoor food-and-beverage marketplaces exclusive to this festival that feature sweet and savory bites worthy of indulgence.  After debuting at the 2013 festival, the marketplaces will return with new menu items like Piggylicious Bacon Cupcakes and a Barbecued Chicken Leg at the Smokehouse Barbecue marketplace.  Floral-flavored lemonades will feature rose and violet notes, and specialty cocktails, wines and beers will offer menu-pairing possibilities.  Last year’s top menu picks like the Watermelon Salad with local baby arugula, feta cheese, pickled red onions and balsamic reduction will be back for an encore at the Florida Fresh marketplace.

More Festival News . . .

  • Goofy, Donald Duck and Daisy Duck topiaries will appear in a new Epcot front entrance garden vignette celebrating spring with a butterfly hunt adventure.  The topiaries will have a new computer-generated look while telling an entertaining story.  Goofy’s butterfly net will prove useless as topiary butterflies light on the back of his floral garb.  A topiary bee buzzes on an exasperated Donald’s head.  The garden will feature a real waterfall and pond with water lilies.
  • A new Timon topiary will join Pumbaa near the park’s Outpost location between China and Germany.  Meanwhile, Peter Pan, Captain Hook and Croc return for a second year to the United Kingdom showcase.  Dozens of additional character topiaries, including Mickey Mouse, will surprise guests beyond the park’s iconic Spaceship Earth.
  • The Flower Power Concert Series welcomes two new acts this year:  Gary Lewis and the Playboys (“This Diamond Ring”) March 14-16, and The Alan Parsons Live Project (“Eye in the Sky”) May 16-18.  During opening weekend, the series kicks off at America Gardens Theatre with fan-favorite band The Guess Who (“American Woman”) March 7-9.  Other pop acts set to perform include Chubby Checker & the Wildcats, The Village People and Paul Revere & The Raiders. (Entertainment is subject to change).
  • Florida agriculture will be in the spotlight at a large World Showcase garden exhibiting fresh Florida crops to include citrus, sugar cane, berries and vegetables.
  • For the second year, illuminated gardens will cast a festive glow across the park when the sun sets each evening.
  • Back by demand, the Disney-Pixar “Cars” garden and playground will bring favorite movie characters to life.  Tinker Bell’s Butterfly House will be aflutter with hundreds of the winged beauties and fairy topiaries of Tinker Bell and Periwinkle.
  • At the Festival Center in the park’s Future World, twice-daily interactive gardening workshops will set the stage for outdoor do-it-yourself inspiration, and gardening guest speakers will appear daily.  Fridays through Sundays, HGTV design celebrities will host home, garden and design seminars.

As they sample from marketplace menus, guests can wander among multiple themed gardens and children’s play areas.  Dozens of Disney-crafted “flower towers,” herb gardens and beds of multi-colored blooms will add to the floral splendor of the park’s landscape.  Disney’s garden gurus estimate 70,000 bedding plants will surround the Future World east and west lakes alone; on the water, 220 mini-gardens will be set afloat.  Several special weekend happenings, including the popular Art in the Garden Weekend, will be scheduled.

Singapore Is Still So Misunderstood! – Guest Blog Post

I have a friendly wager with Kingdom Magic Vacations’ Rick Howard.  Not a huge fan of Singapore’s “performance” at the Epcot International Food & Wine Festival over the past few years, I think it’s fair to say that Rick doesn’t hold out much hope for their offering in 2013.  Yet, from my perspective, well, you’ve already seen me extoll Singapore’s virtues in this space a month or so back HERE.

Singapore Is Still So Misunderstood!

If you remember, my biggest wish was for Singapore to dump their, for me, unappealing Beef Rendang into the South China Sea.  Well, that they did as they introduce Lemongrass Chicken Curry with Coconut and Jasmine Rice in 2013.  I’m really looking forward to this new offering!

The chicken curry is accompanied by an encore of Seared Mahi Mahi with Jasmine Rice and “Singa” Sauce.  Introduced in 2012, I rated this particular plate among my Top 10 dishes last year.  By the way, the “Singa” is, more or less, a Thai-style sweet-hot sauce.

Singapores Mahi Mahi with Jasmine Rice

Back to the bet.  We’ll cover Scotland in more detail later, but I’m convinced that Singapore is going to “out-do” Food & Wine’s rookie kiosk from the U.K.  And, my wager with Rick rests on that happening.  Frankly, by the time the festival is over, I’m convinced that we’re ALL going to agree that Singapore did step it up in 2013 … and I’m CERTAIN that Rick will pick Singapore over Scotland any day of the week!

Singapore Is Still So Misunderstood!

Singapore’s menu finishes with a selection of beverages including:

  • Tiger Beer
  • Marqués de Caceres Satinela (a medium-sweet white wine)
  • Singapore Sling made of Hendrick’s Gin and a Cherry Liqueur and topped with a maraschino cherry)

The Sling has taken a lot of criticism in the past, and I’m not going to argue that those negative comments aren’t without merit.  After all, when I see a recipe that mixes alcohol with all of that cherry “flavoring”, I think immediately of cough syrup.

At the end of the day, however, I think Singapore’s food offering will overrule the unsavoriness of their namesake drink to raise this marketplace in all of our esteem.  I’ll give them a pre-festival grade of “B”.

Guest Assistance Card Updates for Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resorts

You may have heard or read about some changes coming  to one of Disney Parks programs to assist guests with disabilities at Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resorts.

Disney is modifying their current Guest Assistance Card program, which provides access to attractions for guests with disabilities, so Disney can continue to serve the guests who truly need it. Their new program is designed to provide the special experience guests have come to expect from Disney. They also hope it will enable them to help control abuse with the current program that was, unfortunately, widespread and growing at an alarming rate.

The new Disability Access Service (DAS) Card will replace the Guest Assistance Card. Guests will be able to request a Disability Access Service Card at Guest Relations, and they will receive a return time for attractions based on the current wait time.

With that said, Disney Parks has long recognized and accommodated people with different needs. Guests can visit Guest Relations to discuss their individual situation, and Disney will continue to provide assistance that is responsive to their unique circumstances.

Meg Crofton, president Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Operations, United States and France, recently shared a letter of reassurance and continuing commitment to organizations representing the autism and disabled communities.

Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom ‘Hard Level’ Changes – The Villains Get Trickier

Disney Parks Blog shared some exciting updates for fans of the Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom interactive card game – the game just got trickier.

Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom 'Hard Level' Changes - The Villains Get Trickier

As you may know, in Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom, guests become Merlin’s apprentice sorcerers and embark on a challenge to stop Disney villains from stealing one of the four shattered pieces of Merlin’s crystal ball. Guests search for villains’ hiding places throughout the park, and once there, use spell cards to stop the villains in their tracks.

Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom 'Hard Level' Changes - The Villains Get Trickier

The game offers three levels – Easy, Medium and Hard – which can be accessed based on how often and how much a guest plays. Changes were recently made to the game’s existing “Hard” level and now each time a guest plays at this level, a villain’s weakness will change, making the game different and more challenging each time.

Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom 'Hard Level' Changes - The Villains Get Trickier

Merlin the Magician just shared some hints as to how to beat villains at this level:

To figure out which spell types (Gross, Charming, Strong, Flying, Wishful, Quick or Energy) will defeat a villain, simultaneously cast several cards of differing spell types on the first turn of a battle. On that first turn, watch the power levels of the spells you’ve cast. If you watch carefully, you’ll learn which spell type worked best against the villain. When you see a spell hit the villain at full power, you’ll know that’s the type of spell you need to cast.

No changes have been made to the Easy and Medium levels.

The MagicBands are up and running at the Walt Disney World Resort and they are Incredible!

The MagicBands are up and running at the Walt Disney World Resort and they are Incredible!

It may look similar to the James Bond Spy watch from 1965, but, it is oh so much more. The MagicBands are an all-in-one device and is a part of the New My Magic+

When you book your Walt Disney World package you will be given a link by your Travel Planner to log into Your My Disney Experience and associate your reservation. 60 Days prior to your arrival date you will be able to go into your planning center and Customize your MagicBand and it will be shipped directly to your home shortly after. The excitement already starts to build when you have your Magic Box show up at your door step!

The MagicBands are worn on your wrist and can be sized for all wrist sizes. They can be customized by color and with your name or nickname placed on the back of the band. Be sure to order your band prior to 11 days before you travel so you can have it shipped to your home. If you do a last minute booking, no worries, your band will be sent to the resort for when you check in.

The MagicBands can also be decorated with special accessories — MagicBandits and MagicSliders. One accessory that we found very helpful was the CoverBands. Because the bands are made out of magic rubber, a hot day can prove to be a little sweaty, but, with the CoverBand your wrist will remain comfortable and less sweaty. We felt it was worth the $6.95 for one – or you can purchase a pack of three for $15.95.

The bands are water proof, even for that long soak in the hot tub! So you don’t have to worry about losing your room key when you set it on the chair with the towel! You are wearing it!

Just rolled out this past weekend you can now use your MagicBand for your PhotoPass photos. We loved this feature as well – no fumbling for the card while trying to keep track of the kids and all your belongings. Simply pose for your photo and tap your band.

The MagicBand works with your FastPass+ choices that you will select before you arrive or once you get to the theme park. I highly recommend picking them prior to your arrival. We could not believe how much we loved this feature. We thought scheduling them ahead of time would be a pain, but, once you have used it and saw it in action we were sold! Remember the Fast Pass Dash? – Dad gathering all the Key to the World cards and running down Main Street to get the family their fast pass for Space Mountain? Well, now Dad can enjoy the stroll down Main Street with the rest of the family because you already know in advance that you WILL get on Space Mountain. Another really exciting feature with the FastPass+ is the Character Meet and Greet locations. If your daughter always wanted to meet Rapunzel, and you know that you cannot schedule a Character Meal with her, well you can schedule a FastPass + option for the Rapunzel Meet and Greet at the new Princess Fairytale Hall in the Magic Kingdom. You can leave home knowing your little one WILL meet Rapunzel.

All in all, you will love the benefits of the MagicBands. They are convenient, easy to use, fun to get delivered to your doorstep and to accessorize once you arrive.
