0314ZX_0521GD-640x425

Disney Parks Blog recently shared some early details on the St. Patrick’s fun planned for Downtown Disney this year! For starters, the event has a new name: “The Mighty St. Patrick’s Festival” which really ties to the over-the-top revelry we have planned. Spanning eleven days through March 17, 2014 – there is more to experience than ever before.

With festivities centered around Raglan Road and spilling throughout all of Downtown Disney, we can all agree that this celebration is mighty, indeed!

A few of the highlights, below:

  • Live Entertainment – Familiar favorites, including the U2 tribute band “Elevation” and the ever-popular “3 Dollar Band” and “The Willis Clan” mix with Downtown Disney newcomers like “We Banjo 3,” an award-winning quartet from Galway, and “Goitse,” a sought-after group that infuses their own compositions into traditional Irish tunes. With three stages and a non-stop line up of talent on the docket, there’s a sound to suit every taste!
  • Festive Drinks & Food – Not sure which libations to sample first? Craving something delicious and green? Pick up a Mighty St. Patrick’s Passport to find out what’s on the menu. From Irish Cream Coffee at Forty Thirst Street (get a free sample during event hours!) to St. Patrick’s Mickey Mouse apples at Candy Cauldron, your palette will be delighted. For true Irish fare, don’t miss Raglan Road, or for a quicker bite, sample the Fisherman’s Pie (a dish from the Epcot International Food & Wine Festival) at the Superstar Catering Food Truck.
  • Family Fun – It is easy being green with the Mighty Family Fun Zone presented by “Muppets Most Wanted” where guests of all ages can learn to draw Muppets friends, show off their best moves at a DJ Dance Party and take part in games, giveaways and special photo ops. Plus, with dance workshops, stilt walkers and face-painting, there’s more to be found here than at the end of the rainbow!

Here’s to our mightiest St. Patrick’s Celebration yet – I hope to see you there!

Disney Centerpiece Coming to Marketplace Co-Op at Downtown Disney in 2014

You may recall last November that Disney Parks announced a new location that will serve as a testing space for new Disney retail concepts, shops and products coming to Downtown Disney Marketplace at Walt Disney World Resort called the Marketplace Co-Op.

MCO994411-613x488

The first boutique Disney is showcasing  is Disney Centerpiece, which will contain home products for guests who want a splash of Disney in their everyday lives. Disney Parks spoke with Dana Harchar from the Global Retail Development team about the hand-crafted display fixtures you will find in this location once the shop opens in a couple of months.

co-op-3

“Disney Centerpiece will have an eclectic mix of display fixtures for the merchandise,” explained Dana. “The neutral color fixtures will have a well-loved and repurposed feel. I chose a few accent colors that compliment some merchandise created for this shop. Hand-made Hoosier cabinets will line the exposed brick walls. My teammate Bert McCumber printed three-dimensional models that we shared with the store operations team and other cast members working on this shop.”

The smaller fixture model shown above that resembles bench swings stacked on crates will house new decorative pillows. While speaking with Dana in her office, she showed off the computer image she created to determine exactly how many pillows that fixture will hold (she even included miniature Orange Bird pillows!).

MCO994414-613x423

There is an entire new collection of goods inspired by Adventureland and href=”http://www.kingdommagictravel.com/?s=tiki+room”>Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room. Two of which feature the ceramic Orange Bird figure and the miniature ceramic Dole Whips! The home décor team also made several small plates containing artwork with fan favorite word, “Aloha!”

MCO994415-613x613

Several attraction posters from Disney Parks will be included on glassware, small plates and coasters.

co-op-4

Finally, there will be an entire line of retro-inspired merchandise featuring some of the themed lands found at Disneyland park in California or Magic Kingdom Park in Florida.

Look for these items and more when Disney Centerpiece opens at the Marketplace Co-Op in a couple of months.

Which items are your favorites? Please share in the “Comments” below.

Marketplace Co Op Coming to Downtown Disney in Early 2014

Disney Parks Blog  shared with us that a new merchandise location is coming to Downtown Disney Marketplace in spring 2014. The Merchandise Co Op will occupy the space that is currently Team Mickey located next to TrenD. The shop with shops within it will showcase new and innovative Disney retail concepts. Disney Parks Blog caught up with Tom Sheldon, manager of retail design and development for Disney Theme Park Merchandise, to learn more.

Marketplace Co Op Coming to Downtown Disney in Early 2014

“Think about your favorite marketplaces from across the US,” said Tom. “These unique shopping experiences in major cities like Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, or New York all have something in common – they are compelling and distinct, allow visitors to connect to the environment, and foster a sense of discovery. This is our goal with the Marketplace Co Op.”

“This public marketplace will serve as a laboratory to showcase new concepts and specialty products,” continued Tom. “It will be an incubator to introduce exciting new Disney retail shops and products.”

Tom said that they will embellish the building’s construction and design to reveal its craftsmen style identity. They also plan on keeping the original ceiling elements, especially the skylight. The expansive space inside the current location will accommodate several shops.

At inauguration, The Marketplace Co Op’s six new spaces will be:

  • Beautifully Disney – A beauty destination for woman featuring make-up, fragrance and beauty accessories.
  • Cherry Tree Lane – Accessories for the sophisticated woman with a passion for scarves, shoes, bags and jewelry.

Splitsville Menu Adds 16 Delicious, Gluten-Free Dishes at Downtown Disney

Splitsville Menu Adds 16 Delicious, Gluten-Free Dishes at Downtown Disney

Spicy Tuna Roll

Splitsville chefs at Downtown Disney adds new dishes that are not only gluten-free, they are incredibly tasty!  Disney Parks Blog share the new menu and if there wasn’t a little “GF” symbol on it, you’d never guess that much of the new menu for Splitsville Luxury Lanes at Downtown Disney is gluten-free.

Splitsville Menu Adds 16 Delicious, Gluten-Free Dishes at Downtown Disney

Fantasy Roll

“We considered a separate menu, but decided to integrate the gluten-free dishes into the regular menu,” says Splitsville co-founder Mark Gibson. “So many of our guests are eating gluten-free these days, we wanted our featured “GF” items to have great flavor and appeal – we didn’t want to simply reconstruct existing dishes.”

Splitsville Menu Adds 16 Delicious, Gluten-Free Dishes at Downtown Disney

Fajita Steak Bowl

So Chef Patrick Steele set to work, creating menu additions that, while gluten-free, are also quite tasty. The biggest hits are the generous rice bowls: fiesta chicken, steak fajita, Asian shrimp and spicy veggie, all full of flavor and served with sticky rice. But it may be the gluten-free pizza crust that is the best surprise, a crunchy, thin crust topped with mozzarella and fresh tomato sauce, and you can pile on your choice of “GF” toppings. You’ll never miss the wheat flour.

Splitsville Menu Adds 16 Delicious, Gluten-Free Dishes at Downtown Disney

Gluten-Free Pizza

And while sushi is generally a safe zone, some sauces and ingredients aren’t gluten-free, like Kani Kama krab, a favorite white fish mix that contains wheat. Splitsville has added gluten-free sushi rolls – our favorite was The Alberto with no rice, just lean spicy tuna and avocado rolled in thinly sliced cucumber and served with lemon ponzu sauce.

Splitsville Menu Adds 16 Delicious, Gluten-Free Dishes at Downtown Disney

Fiesta Chicken Rice Bowl

Gluten-free appetizers include Blazing Chicken (tenderloins in spicy Buffalo sauce), steamed edamame and seared ahi tuna, which also is served as a salad with spring mix and Asian pear dressing. A gluten-free turkey BLT salad is another winner, a bowl full of roasted turkey, lettuce, avocado, tomatoes, bacon, red onion and blue cheese. Entrees include blackened mahi mahi with spicy voodoo shrimp and grilled salmon with mango chutney, fresh broccoli and sushi rice.

Splitsville Menu Adds 16 Delicious, Gluten-Free Dishes at Downtown Disney

Ahi Tuna Salad

“We’re amazed how many guests are eating gluten free,” says Gibson, “it’s now regarded as a better-for-you choice rather than just an option for those with gluten intolerance, and we wanted our menu to reflect this dietary trend with diversity and flavor.”

The brand-new Lava Lounge at Rainforest Café

opened just two weeks ago, and already the place is on fire – literally. (Stay tuned, we’ll get to that.)

General Manager Jeff Kruger has clued us in to some of their most popular items, including the Sparkling Volcano and Jungle Runner, pictured below.

Lava Lounge at Rainforest Café in Downtown Disney

Wait time: There was a wait to dine inside at Rainforest Café, but at the Lava Lounge, seating is first-come, first-served. When I arrived at 5:45 p.m., there were still plenty of open tables and a few seats at the bar. My wait time? Zero minutes.

Food: Not only can you order from the full Rainforest Café menu, but there’s also a special menu featuring items created just for the Lava Lounge. That’s right, there are even more choices, so chances are there’s something everyone in your party will enjoy. The Volcanic Sliders and the Tectonic Tacos both sounded delicious!

Ambience: If you like waterfront views, want to be part of a “volcano” experience and prefer talking to shouting, then the Lava Lounge is for you. The setting is a friendly laid-back bar that feels casual and welcoming; it’s just the kind of place you’d want to end up after a long day in Disney Parks. (And I saw a great mix of adults and families, so don’t let the “Lounge” title throw you off; it’s a space for all kinds of groups.)

Wow Factor: The food and service alone may dazzle you (you did see that Sparkling Volcano dessert, didn’t you?), but if you need more to get you fired up, the Rainforest Café Volcano should do the trick. “Erupting” multiple times each evening, it’s a sizzling display of flame spires, fireballs, steam bursts and fog that erupts in sync with a light and sound show. It’s the sort of spectacle you’d only expect to see at a Disney theme park. Or maybe Las Vegas. Either way, it’s truly impressive, and you can see, hear and even feel it from inside the Lava Lounge.
